I just survived a heart attack and it’s changed me

Gratitude. Perspective. Hope. There’s nothing like a brush with death to focus your mind on what really matters.

This week, I’m not writing about business. I am sharing a story that's not just close to my heart but about my heart.

Earlier this week, I suffered a heart attack. It was the most frightening, humbling experience of my life. I had to confront my own mortality for the first time.

Without prompt and expert medical attention, and the incredible National Health Service (NHS), I wouldn’t be here right now to tell the tale.

I dedicate this post to Yorkshire’s finest, the amazing paramedics whose skill and compassion saved my life.

Thank you to Michael Petre, Adam Page, and Christopher Smart, three remarkable individuals from Yorkshire Ambulance Services. Your names are etched in my memory forever. Your swift and expert response is the reason I’m still alive today.

You have such a tough and challenging job, working tirelessly to save lives every day, yet you were so kind and patient. There aren’t enough words to express how grateful I feel, and how lucky I am that you were there when I needed you most.

In a twist of fate, Adam used to work at the Street Lane Bakery, a business I now support. He left to embark on a new career as a paramedic, and I’m fortunate that he did.

This has been a terrifying time but one that has been made bearable by the unfailing support of family and friends. I have been honoured by all the well wishes, and I feel so humbled to be in so many prayers. Thank you to everyone who reached out. The aftermath of the heart attack has been overwhelming, and your words of encouragement and hope have been a source of immense comfort and strength.

A special thank you goes out to the team at BigChange, and my colleagues at all the other businesses I’m involved with. In times of crisis, we are reminded of the strength and depth of the bonds we share.

So, what now?

This heart attack has changed me. It has reshaped my perspective on the world in a profound way. Suddenly, I’m all too aware of the fragility of life, and the importance of health and well-being.

As I continue upon this journey of recovery and reflection, I am filled with gratitude. In my hour of need, I felt truly blessed by the people around me. This experience has been a stark reminder of the preciousness of life.

Thank you, from the bottom of my now healthier heart. This experience has changed me. I’ll never forget how lucky I am to be here, and plan to cherish every moment.

Wishing you a very speedy recovery Martin. The NHS is a wonderful thing. Highly recommend giving all the Big Change staff the skills to save a life with CPR training. It's the skill I've learnt at KPMG that I treasure the most.
