I want to write like you.
"Angie, I want to write like you. Can you mentor me?"
Today, when I woke up, I saw this message in my DM.
Since I took my LinkedIn journey seriously, I have received a lot of such messages.
You may ask: Why have I not started a mentorship class?
This is because I do not have any content strategy. Most often, when people come to me, they ask for a content strategy. I am a very spontaneous individual. What I see and hear is my source of inspiration. I do not have a particular time of the day or specific place where I write. I can write at any time and anywhere.
What do I do to help individuals who ask me this question?
I share my knowledge, ask questions and respond to any questions they may have.
Today, I want to answer the question: How can I write like you?
As hard as it is for me to say, I need to say it. You can't write like me. I am not saying this because I think I am a better writer than you. That is far from it. I am saying this because you are unique. Your experiences are unique.
Regardless of our differences as individuals, there are some questions we need to answer to become great writers. So, you can answer these questions instead of wanting to write like me.
Now let us dive in.
What would you like to write about?
As an individual, there are so many things we wish to talk about. It can be anything at all. The most important thing is to know what exactly you want to talk about.
Recommended by LinkedIn
Why are you writing about it?
Every decision we make is deeply rooted in purpose. Know your "why" before you start writing.
Who are you writing for?
There are so many people in the world but the truth is that you can't write for everybody. Not all people will be interested in what you talk about, so find your tribe and deliver nothing but the best.
What will make them read what you write?
Understand that you are not the only person talking about that topic. This is why you need to reflect deeply about who you are and what makes you different so that you can incorporate that in your writing. Over the last year, whenever people come to my DM to encourage me to continue doing what I do, one thing they talk about is the fact that I can use stories to explain my concepts. This is what makes them read what I write.
Do you now understand why I said, "You can't write like me"?
What do I write about? I write about common mistakes we make in the English Language. Also, I use my personal stories to inspire others.
Why do I write about these things? I believe that these common mistakes can make us lose opportunities. Effective communication is a skill we all need to develop. And with the inspiration, I believe we all need that as we journey in life.
Who do I write for? I write for people who want to achieve academic and professional success. I write for people who need a push so they can develop themselves.
What makes my audience read what I write? I write what I feel. I tell my stories as they are.
Now, it is your turn to answer these questions.
Your answers will give you your unique writing style. Remember, writing is an art, so create your masterpiece.
Until we meet again, I want to see your posts in my feed.

3moGreat masterpiece! Creativity in writing is all about knowing and doing what works for you. When it comes to writing creatively, "clarity" is key". In as much as we all have our unique ways of carving and painting inks into words, we must never forget the "message." We must make sure people get the message we are trying to convey through our write ups. And if that means we have to read our own piece over and over again, we should. Until we ourselves understand what we are penning down, nobody will. That's why I like the fact that Angela said, " we must know why we are writing and who we are writing for." Knowing our purposes for writing and the audience we want to serve, gives us direction to reach their hearts with our words. Overall, consistency is key in mastering any game. Therefore, let's stay consistent until we become a master of our own pieces. Thank you!

1yGreat Post Angela Ankoma ... many useful insights delivered. I personally love the question of "Why you want to write". So many people long to do things without necessarily having a purpose for them... Thanks for highlighting that for us.
