IBM Licensing - when to consider fewer cores
*IBM License Tip* Consider reducing number of physical cores where you've decided to license full capacity for an IBM product.
This might seem counterintuitive but there are scenarios where less processing power is better. Server licensing and in particular IBM licensing is one of those scenarios.
If you have either decided or must (unsupported OS) license all the cores in a cluster review if all the processing capacity is still required.
There is often a compelling business case to make a change when you show the cost of IBM licenses for all those cores you are NOT using.
This becomes especially important if you are under licensed and will need to buy more expensive IBM licenses
It might be as simple as downgrading the cluster from 4 to 2 nodes or moving the VMs to a smaller cluster. Some architectures allow you to physically disable or remove cores.
When you present the savings in IBM licenses it might even justify buying new dedicated hardware.
