Breast cancer remains one of the most pressing health concerns, but the good news is with early detection, awareness, and preventive measures, you can significantly reduce its impact.

India is experiencing an increase in the cases of breast cancer. People believe that breast cancer affects only women, but it can affect men, too. WHO says 0.5-1% of men are at risk of breast cancer, making the situation rare. The treatment for both men and women is the same.

Breast cancer is a medical condition that occurs when breast tissues grow out of control and form tumors. It is highly treatable at an early stage. However, the treatment efficiency decreases as it reaches an advanced stage.

India Recorded 1.41 Million New Cancer Cases in 2022; Breast Cancer Ranks Highest

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted a study that reveals breast cancer cases, and the mortality rate will increase between the years 2022 and 2045 in India.

They conducted the study on BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). In all other BRICS countries, lung cancer tops, while in India, breast cancer is the major reason for cancer-related casualties.

Researchers blame socioeconomic factors for this condition. They also say, “A prior review indicates that BRICS countries accounted for 33.3% of new breast cancer cases worldwide and 36.9% of global breast cancer deaths. Additionally, these countries experienced a significant upward trend in breast cancer incidence.”

Are socioeconomic factors enough to blame? There are a plethora of other factors that contribute to breast cancer.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found some risk factors contributing to breast cancer.

  1. Genes- Inheritance mutations to BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can increase ovarian and breast cancer risks.
  2. Age- The risks of breast cancer increase with age, especially around 50. However, a study reveals that young women are also more likely to develop breast cancer.
  3. Reproductive Health- Your reproductive system may contribute to breast cancer. The onset of menstruation at 12 and menopause after 55 in women has been associated with an elevated likelihood of developing breast cancer
  4. Family history of breast cancer- Having a family history increases the risk of breast cancer. If any family member (mother, sister, or daughter) has breast or ovarian cancer, take preventive measures.
  5. Exposure to Certain Drugs- Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a common medical drug given to women during pregnancy to prevent miscarriage. Avoid its consumption to prevent the risk of breast cancer.

A study reveals that women with breast cancer in India have a five-year survival rate of 66.4%. How to detect early?

Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer to Look For

Symptoms differ from person to person. Some might be asymptomatic (no symptoms). For them, regular testing can help prevent the chances of breast cancer.

  1. Lump in the underarm or breast
  2. Swelling or thickening in parts of the breast.
  3. Irritation on breast skin.
  4. Dimpling of breast skin.
  5. Flaky skin or redness in the nipple area or around the breast.
  6. Pain in the nipple area.
  7. Pulling in or changing the nipple.
  8. Nipple discharge or blood (other than breast milk)
  9. Pain around areas of the breast.
  10. An everlasting pain in the armpit or breast.

Raising awareness is essential in preventing breast cancer.

October is popular as breast cancer awareness month. This year, the World Health Organization’s breast cancer campaign is ‘No one should face breast cancer alone.’ The campaign aims to raise awareness, share insightful knowledge, support patient care, and address disparities. In 2021, the WHO formed the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI) to reduce global breast cancer mortality.

According to a report by the National Institutes of Health, in 2024, India recorded approximately 310,720 new breast cancer cases in women. 16% of women were under 50 years of age. Breast cancer accounts for more than a quarter of all female cancers.

States such as Kerala, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu hold most of the breast cancer burden. Meghalaya stands at last with the lowest number. Other states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand contribute 22% of breast cancer burden in the age group between 55-64 years of age.

By increasing awareness, India can tackle breast cancer head-on, reduce the number of late-stage diagnoses, and empower women to take charge of their health. This can ultimately increase the survival rate and promote a better quality of life for those at risk. As breast cancer is curable at its early stage, creating awareness can help in early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
