I'm 70 and Have No Intention of Retiring. Here's Why

That's me in my office!

In a world where retirement is often seen as the ultimate goal, a time to finally relax after decades of hard work, my story deviates from the norm. At 70, the age when many have already hung up their work heels and closed their laptops, I find myself invigorated by the idea of continuing my journey as a blogger and content creator. Here, I share why retirement is not on my agenda.

Embracing a Non-traditional Path

Retirement is traditionally viewed as a well-earned rest following a long career. However, for me, the concept of stopping at a certain age seems arbitrary. Why should our passions and pursuits be limited by a number? My career as a blogger and content creator, something I embarked upon later in life, doesn't feel like work in the traditional sense. It's a passion, an extension of who I am, and stopping simply because I've reached a certain age feels counterintuitive.

Lifelong Learning and Adaptation

One of the most thrilling aspects of my work is the constant evolution of technology and digital platforms. The landscape of blogging and content creation is ever-changing, and keeping up with these changes keeps my mind active and engaged. This pursuit of lifelong learning is not just a way to stay relevant; it's a way to stay connected to a world that is always moving forward. The digital era has no age limit, and I find joy in adapting and evolving with it.

The Joy of Connection

Through my work, I've built an incredible network of followers, fellow bloggers, and content creators of all ages and backgrounds. This community is a source of support, inspiration, and camaraderie. Retiring would mean stepping back from these connections, and that is a loss I'm not willing to accept. The interaction with my audience and peers is a significant part of what makes my work fulfilling.

Financial Independence and Security

The financial aspect of continuing to work cannot be overlooked. While I am fortunate to have a stable financial foundation, continuing to generate income through my blog and content provides additional security and many times doubles or triples what I'd have to otherwise live on. It ensures that I am not solely reliant on savings or fixed-income sources like social security. This financial independence is empowering, especially in a society where economic uncertainty is a reality for many seniors.

It ensures that I am not solely reliant on savings or fixed-income sources like social security. Health Benefits

There's substantial evidence suggesting that staying mentally and physically active can have positive health outcomes, especially for seniors. Engaging in meaningful work can improve cognitive function, mental health, and overall well-being. The challenges and excitement of my work keep me mentally sharp and emotionally fulfilled. Could I be warding off Alzheimer's? I have no idea, but I'm still going to keep trying.

Shattering Age Stereotypes

By continuing my work, I'm challenging the stereotypes associated with age. Society often undervalues the elderly, seeing them as out of touch or incapable of contributing meaningfully. Through my blog and social media presence, I demonstrate that age is not a barrier to creativity, insight, or relevance. I am part of a growing number of seniors who are redefining what it means to be 'old'. I've been able to be the face of many a campaign geared to people my age and yes, even younger.

Flexibility and Balance

Unlike traditional jobs, my role as a blogger and content creator offers tremendous flexibility. I have the freedom to set my own schedule, work at my own pace, and choose projects that genuinely interest me. This flexibility allows me to balance work with other aspects of life such as spending time with family, traveling, or engaging in hobbies. It's a perfect blend of productivity and personal enjoyment.

Continuing to Grow My Legacy

Throughout my career, I've built a body of work that I'm proud of. Continuing to create content allows me to expand this legacy. Each blog post, video, or social media update is a testament to my life experiences, perspectives, and creativity. It's a legacy that can inspire others, regardless of their age, to pursue their passions and never stop contributing to the world around them.

Encouraging Others

My journey serves as an encouragement to others, especially those in their later years, to reconsider the traditional path to retirement. There's a growing trend of seniors who are reinventing themselves, starting new careers, or continuing their professional journeys well beyond the expected retirement age. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to see age not as a limitation, but as an asset—a wealth of experience and wisdom to draw upon.

Personal Fulfillment

Above all, my decision to continue working is about personal fulfillment. It brings me joy, a sense of accomplishment, and keeps me connected to a world that is constantly evolving. The idea of ceasing to do something I love simply because I've reached a certain age is not something I subscribe to. My work is a significant part of my identity, and as long as it continues to bring me happiness and fulfillment, I see no reason to stop.

Conclusion

In a society that often equates aging with decline, I stand as a counterexample. At 70, I am as engaged, motivated, and enthusiastic about my work as I have ever been. Retirement, in the traditional sense, is not a milestone I seek. Instead, I embrace the ongoing journey of growth, learning, and contribution. My story is a testament to the fact that age should not dictate our pursuits. As long as there is passion and a willingness to adapt, there is no expiry date on our ability to contribute, create, and inspire.

Retirement is a personal choice, and for many, it is a well-deserved rest after a long career. But for me, and perhaps for others like me, it's a concept that doesn't align with our vision of a fulfilling life. We find joy in our work, a sense of purpose in our creativity, and a connection to the world that remains vital regardless of age. So, here I am at 70, with no intention of retiring, living my life to the fullest, and encouraging others to consider what retirement means to them. After all, age is just a number, and the journey of life doesn't have a predetermined endpoint based on that number. It's about what makes us happy, fulfilled, and connected—and for me, that's continuing to do what I love.

I remember working with you back in my Marshalls days (!), and I was so impressed by your passion for what you do and the pure joy of it. No surprise that "retirement" would be a bore, and that you are continuing to find such success. Congratulations!
