I'm Getting Interviews -- How Do I Get a Job Offer?

Dear friends,

It's so frustrating to go on job interviews and then wonder, "Did that interview go the way I wanted it to?"

You might realize that you don't know how the interview went, because you were so focused on giving the right answers to the interviewer's questions that you can barely remember the conversation.

Maybe you get a message from the employer that says, "Thanks for interviewing with us. We are going in a different direction."

You are talented and you will get another job but in the back of your mind you might wonder, "What if my interview could have gone better?"

Interviewers seldom share feedback with candidates about their interview approach.

Unless you get a job offer, how would you know whether or not your interview hit the mark?

If you don't want the job, then it doesn't matter. You wouldn't have taken the job if they offered it to you.

But if you did want the job and you don't get it, you're likely to wonder - "Was my interview as awesome as it could have been?"

A Simple (I Didn't Say Easy!) Process

The good thing about a job search is that the process itself tells you when your approach isn't working - so you can focus your energy where it will have the most impact.

  1. If you're not getting interviews, your branding (resume/LinkedIn profile/applications) needs attention.
  2. If you're getting interviews but not job offers, your interview approach needs attention.

If you feel nervous about job interviews, you're not alone!

Virtually everyone feels the same way.

Here's an Interviewing Tip you can use right away:

Here's a simple interview technique that will help you when you're asked the question, "How long have you been using [PowerPoint, e.g.]?"

Answering, "Oh, about three years," or "Since last July" doesn't convey anything useful.

HOW you use a tool and how comfortable you are with the tool are way more important than how long you've been using it. Even though the interviewer asked "how long have you used this tool?" you can have more impact than that.

Instead of a quick, forgettable answer, tell a quick story.

"Let's see, I first used PowerPoint to create a presentation for an unexpected customer demo about a year ago. I learned PowerPoint by using it and after that I got way more into it along with other presentation tools like Canva and Beautiful.ai."

A story is WAY more impactful and memorable than a one-or-two-word answer!

You are a smart and talented person who deserves a great job. Just a few adjustments and refinements to your interview technique can make a huge difference in your job search success, now and throughout your working life.

I can't wait to share interview tips with you!

Here's to you and your growing flame,

Liz

P.S. I timed myself telling the PowerPoint story above. At a normal speaking pace the story took 16 seconds to tell. That's not very long. Remember, a job interview is not an oral exam!

Go ahead and tell a quick story at your next interview - it's a great way to get comfortable stepping into your power.
