I'm not pro-Royal, but...
As it’s a Bank Holiday, I thought I’d make this month’s article a short one! And it seems topical to talk about Her Majesty the Queen.
I am by no means a Royalist, the idea of monarchy (like aristocracy) is usually the polar opposite to the values I try to live by. In principle I can’t stand nepotism or anything like it, and I’m totally for earning what you have.
But the exception to that rule is the Queen herself. If you attended the webinar I ran yesterday, then you’d have heard me talk about the importance of leading by example and holding ourselves to the same or higher standards than those we lead, and for me this has always been something Queen Elizabeth II has been masterful at.
For my entire life, the Queen has always provided the example of understated competence, service and composure that have been a valuable ideal to look up to, not to mention quintessentially British. I think the UK as a country has always needed that and we've often struggled to find this kind of example anywhere else.
Perhaps the best example of this is the quiet dignity shown at the funeral of Prince Philip, when even in the face of mourning the loss of her partner of 73 years, the Queen sat alone; observing the law of the land at the time and following COVID rules when it would have been easy and even understandable to break or ignore them.
We’ve all seen the, now famous, photograph from that day.

This is the kind of example that I’m talking about, and it’s 100 times more important when our elected leaders seem to be falling so short these days.
So, for this reason, and out of the huge respect I have for the many decades of service given to the UK – even well past the age of 90 years old (can’t imagine many other people working to that age!) – I will be raising a glass or three to Her Majesty this weekend:
“To the Queen!”
