A reflection on the evolving nature of an automotive engineer's role told through 15 years of engineering research and education
Engineers have important roles within organisations and for society that deliver the range of technologies, products and systems that enhance the lives of everyone. Automotive engineering in particular underpins our society's access to housing, employment, healthcare, and education. For the past few decades automotive engineering has been at the forefront of reducing the environmental impact from the movement of people and goods.
But engineering is changing. A series of rupture points in the automotive sector has brought into question the technologies we use for propulsion, but also the fundamental structure of business models and society dependent on individual vehicle ownership. This raises questions that go beyond engineering alone, a world engineers must understand and engage in to continue to thrive.
Richard has experienced this through the lens of an engineering researcher and educator. IN this lecture he will share his reflections on the changing role and responsibilities of engineers and how the role of Universities is evolving to meet these needs. His reflection will be illustrated through a series of research and educational case studies including engine thermal management, electrification, emissions measurement precision and the creation of a transdisciplinary doctoral training centre in propulsion and mobility.
