The Imperative of Developing Leaders: Filling a Void in Today's World
Effective leadership is not just the backbone of successful organizations but the cornerstone of thriving communities and societies. Yet, today we face a glaring challenge: fewer people are stepping up to the mantle of leadership. As many live life distracted, mindlessly, and on autopilot, the necessity to develop new leaders for sustainable and meaningful growth becomes ever more pressing.
Awareness: The First Step
As Socrates famously advised, "Know thyself." Self-awareness is the cornerstone of effective leadership. Only when a leader is in tune with their thoughts, emotions, and actions can they guide others with genuine impact. Eleanor Roosevelt took this idea further by saying, "To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart."
We need to start with looking inward, understanding our blueprints and acknowledging our areas of strength and opportunity. Only then can we begin to spread seeds of leadership unto others.
How well do you know yourself?
In the global hospitality sector, the most successful companies are increasingly focusing on leadership training that emphasizes self-awareness as a foundation for success. From boutique hotels in New York to eco-resorts in Bali, a leader's ability to be aware of themselves and their team is considered a stepping stone to broader organizational success.
Inspiration: The Catalyst for Transformation
Leadership is not just about directing or managing; it's about inspiring those who follow you. As Peter Drucker aptly said, "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." In order to inspire, we must first become comfortable with vulnerability and the dissolution of the ego, for inspiration can only come when we understand that commanding and directing will not lead to long-term engagement within our teams. This can be a tough pill to swallow for those that were used to getting what they wanted out of people simply because of their titles within their organizations.
The best companies in the world are placing inspiring leadership at the forefront of their employee development initiatives. Sheryl Sandberg encapsulates this when she says, "Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence."

Empowerment: A Path to Shared Success
Empowerment is more than just a buzzword; it's a foundational element of leadership. Ronald Reagan captured this sentiment by stating, "The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." In the hospitality industry, a participative management style empowers employees at all levels to contribute ideas and make decisions, fulfilling Maimonides' wisdom: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
Once you become great at empowering - that is, giving up the relentless control over the process, trusting the individuals under your leadership to execute an outcome more than a specific process - you can then move into co-creation. Once you build a culture of co-creation, where anyone in the organization can essentially lead, you can make major gains in trust and empowerment.
The Cycle of Leadership Development
The function of leadership extends beyond the individual. As Ralph Nader puts it, "The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers." This cyclical process of leader development is paramount to our collective success as humans. Mentorship and leadership development programs are increasingly common in the global hospitality sector, reflecting Simon Sinek’s idea that "Success is not just about making yourself better; it’s about making other people better too."
As we navigate the complexities of modern life, it is crucial to invest in developing leaders who are aware, inspirational, and empowering. Given the challenges we face, nurturing a flourishing network of leaders is not just a corporate necessity but a societal obligation.
