The importance of giving back to society: lessons from social work

Contributing to society through social actions is a transformative experience, both for those who donate and those who receive. These works teach us about empathy, collectivity and the impact that small actions can have on the world.

That's why I think that bringing this topic to the forefront is so important for us to reflect on the importance of giving back to society a little of what we have achieved.

What does it mean to give back to society?

Many people ask me: but Tiago, what does it mean to give back to society? I like to emphasize that giving back to society goes beyond financial donations.

It's about sharing time, knowledge and skills to promote positive changes in communities that face challenges. Actions such as mentoring young people, supporting local causes or participating in volunteer initiatives can generate lasting impacts.

In the corporate world, this is known as social responsibility. However, the practice also applies to individuals: as leaders or professionals, we have the opportunity to create a legacy, influence people and contribute to a more balanced society.

Lessons we learn from social work

Participating in social initiatives teaches us a lot about the world and about ourselves. After all, by getting involved with vulnerable communities, we start to see the world from a different perspective.

This exchange of experiences makes us understand realities that we often ignore and reinforces the importance of looking beyond our own achievements.

A simple gesture, such as offering professional guidance or helping someone find opportunities, can transform lives. The impact of our actions can be greater than we imagine, especially when it comes to education and psychological support.

In addition, social work is also an opportunity to develop soft skills, such as leadership, communication and teamwork. These skills are as valuable in personal life as they are in professional careers.

That's why I like to emphasize that giving back to society helps us find purpose and meaning in what we do. It's not just about working to achieve individual goals, but also about contributing to something bigger.

How to get started?

If you've never participated in social actions, start small. Look for NGOs or groups in your region and see how you can help.

Share your professional skills, such as language lessons, motivational speeches or career guidance. Platforms like LinkedIn are also great for connecting with initiatives that need support.

Giving back is a form of recognition: for everything we have received throughout our lives, for the support of others and for the opportunities we have had. It is also a way to build bridges, strengthen communities and leave a positive legacy.
