The Importance of Our Financial Security in 2024: Your Vote Matters
While the 4th of July is known as Independence Day in the USA, this year it holds a different kind of significance for us here in the UK. It is the day of our general election, a moment that will redefine our future. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced this crucial date while standing outside No. 10 Downing Street, jackedt soaked with rain, telling us that we can either build on the progress the Conservatives have made or "go back to square one" with Labour.
In today's uncertain times, securing our financial future has never been more crucial. With the upcoming election, we face a pivotal moment that could significantly impact our financial stability and public services. The election will be a two-party race – your vote will be the most important consumer decision you will make this year.
The Conservatives have been in power for 14 years, steering the nation through a series of ups and downs. From economic fluctuations to political scandals, it's been a rollercoaster ride. Despite government claims of pouring more money into public services, including the NHS, I believe our everyday experiences tell a different story. What do you think?
We're told that more funds have been allocated to the NHS and other public services. Yet, we've all seen how facilities are stretched to their limits, and the quality of care has diminished. Take, for instance, the long waiting times at our local hospitals or the lack of essential resources in our schools. Essential services cut, roads filled with holes, Interest rates crippling for those with mortgages. The list is long – these are just the ones that come to my mind whilst writing. And They aren't just numbers on a spreadsheet; they're real issues affecting our lives.
This election is not just about choosing a party; it's about making a crucial consumer decision that will make a huge impact on our financial security.
What does a continued Conservative government mean for us? While they speak of trust, many of us feel that trust has been eroded. The aftermath of Partygate and the PPE scandal still lingers, casting doubt on the government's ability to manage effectively.
Trust is a cornerstone of effective governance. The scandals we've witnessed have shaken our confidence. How can we trust a government that seems to prioritise its interests over the public's well-being? As we approach the election, it's vital to reflect on whether the current leadership has truly earned our trust.
Look around you. What do you see? Feel the impact of the policies in your daily life. Are you better off now than you were a decade ago? Are our public services delivering what we need? Your vote is not just a political statement; it's a personal decision that will shape your future and that of your community.

Now we must consider what the alternative will look like. The Labour Party website lists “10 Labour policies to change Britain”. They promise to deliver two million more NHS appointments a year. They tell of the drastic action needed to cut waiting lists from the 204% rise during the Tory years. How will they pay for it? It’s not stated, yet we know that it will cost a huge amount of money.
They promise to close the unfair tax break that private schools receive – namely being exempt from VAT. They promise to tax the privates and put the funding into the state system. But is that a good thing when every child from the UK who opts out of the private system to avoid the VAT will cost the tax payer about £8k annually fund their state education, not to mention the place needed for that child in an already oversubscribed system. Many of the 10 promises made by Labour (www.labour.org.uk) are sound in my opinion, yet the question still needs to be asked – how will they be paid for? Are they ready to take charge of the country’s very wobbly purse strings? and is Keir Starmer the leader we have been waiting for? You need to decide.
We have less than six weeks to work out where we will put our cross on election day. A very short time to lean in, get interested and work out what this election will mean to you.
There is one seed that I would like to plant today though – this is the time for us all to take charge of our own financial destiny. I don’t believe any government can or will, take care of us all. Gone are the days of relying on the state to prop us up. It is time for us all to upskill, learn and earn. The cost of living is not going to come down – ever. We all need to do more, if we can, to fend for ourselves so that financial help goes to those that really need it. This will be a topic for an article in the future.
On 1st July 2024, your vote matters more than ever. Participate in this election and make your voice heard. You are relevant. You are important. Here in Cheltenham, my home town, it is either Conservative or Liberal Democrat. They are the either/or choices we have.
Evaluate your experiences, consider your financial security, and think about the kind of future you want. Your vote can influence our country's direction and (maybe) ensure our needs are met.

7moDefinitely not Conservative, Labour or Green. I suppose LibDem might be the best of a very bad lot.

7motwo thoughts come to mind, both better captured in quotes from others. The first from the 18th century French philosopher Joseph de Maistre who wrote that, “every country gets the government it deserves.” the second comes from Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

7moAs you predicted, Fanny, I have evaluated my options. I firmly believe that the Tories have the edge in business and finance. In many ways, the devil you know is better than the one you don't. Rishi has only been PM for 18 months. He inherited the fallout from the worst crises of any government since WW2. And I suspect we’re not done yet. But Chancellor Rishi did support us (in the Pandemic as a holiday let owner); things are improving slowly, albeit not much, if anything, for everyone yet. However much money is thrown at the NHS, whose incredible staff saved my life in 2022, it won't ever be enough with an ageing population and new technologies to be paid for. How can Labour possibly promise to fix everything? By spending their way out of all the country’s problems? After five years, we’ll be even worse off, and it will take longer to recover, with everyone left far worse off. (I could go on!) Taking responsibility for our financial security now and making informed decisions has never been more critical.
Money is never an issue in my vote - not mine anyway - but morality is! Maybe they should all take a leaf out of the Scottish parliament's lead and buy each MP a copy of the book "how to tax citizens so that their money is well spent and they are happy"!
