The Importance of Staking Plants and Trees in Landscaping

How to Stake a Plant or Tree

1. Choose the right type of stake for the plant. 

1. Drive the stake into the ground at a 45-degree angle, away from the root ball of the plant. The stake should be deep enough to provide support without being too close to the roots. 

1. Attach the plant to the stake using a soft material, such as a tree strap or cloth tie. Avoid using wire or anything that could damage the bark. 

1. As the plant grows, gradually loosen the ties or straps to allow the trunk to move slightly in the wind. This will help the plant to develop a strong root system. 

1. Once the plant is well-established, remove the stake and any ties or straps. 

When to Remove Stakes 

Stakes should be removed once the plant or tree is well-established, typically after one or two growing seasons. Signs that a plant is ready to have its stake removed include: 

• The trunk or branches are no longer swaying in the wind 
• The plant has developed new growth
