Improving Global Freight Forwarding with Generative AI: Navigating the Future with ChatGPT-4 and GETs

As we progress into 2024 and anticipate 2025, global air, sea, and road freight will be further transformed by advancements in generative AI, including ChatGPT-4 and the emerging marketplace for generative AI tools (GETs). Besides having to constantly watch integrity, security and validity of data transformed via genAI, Forwarders must enrich their KPIs! So what?

  • Advanced Predictive Analytics: ChatGPT-4's predictive analytics enable freight forwarders to forecast demand for shipping volumes during peak seasons accurately, like predicting increased demand for air freight during electronics launches or holiday seasons. Existing Industry KPI enriched by AI: Forecast Accuracy - Measured by comparing actual shipping volumes against forecasts, aiming for tighter variances and improved demand planning.
  • Specialized GETs Marketplace: Consider a GET designed specifically for optimizing container load planning, reducing empty spaces and maximizing container utilization. Existing Industry KPI enriched by AI: Container Utilization Rate - The percentage of space used in containers, with an aim to maximize the use of available space, thereby reducing shipping costs and improving efficiency.
  • Enhanced Automation: Automation through GETs can streamline the customs clearance process by pre-filling documentation based on cargo details and historical data. Existing IndustryKPI enriched by AI: Customs Clearance Time - The time taken from cargo arrival to clearance, with a goal to reduce it, thereby speeding up overall transit times.
  • Strengthening Partnerships through Transparency: ChatGPT-4 can analyze partner performance data to rank suppliers based on reliability and compliance. Existing Industry KPI enriched by AI: Supplier On-Time Delivery (OTD) Rate - The percentage of shipments received from suppliers on or before the promised delivery date, aiming for higher rates to increase supplier reliability.
  • Championing Sustainability: A GET might assess routes and modes of transportation for their carbon footprint, suggesting alternatives that reduce emissions. Existing Industry KPI enriched by AI: Carbon Emissions per Shipment - Measured in kilograms of CO2 equivalent per shipment, with a target to reduce it over time.

One more (personal) thing…

Also in 2024 the rule is “No Technology without people”

In particular valid for all customer-facing genAI use cases, where hallucination risks must be mitigated and data validity issues fixed: The best solutions are created through the orchestration of People, Process & Technology.

My approach to leadership is defined by a relentless customer focus and a profound appreciation for my teams. Hallucinating systems as a result of uncontrolled processes. I like your summary: Solutions are created through People, Process &.......Technology.

Overall, blockchain and AI have the potential to revolutionize the way logistics work. ✈ 🚢 These technologies can improve transparency, efficiency, productivity, and collaboration. 📈 As a result, they can help logistics companies to reduce costs, improve customer service, and become more competitive. (In theory yes but not always in practice!) 😇

Thanks Stefan. Good tips.

Thanks for your putting valuable thoughts into it. Yes, in my opinion being too restrictive or even banning is the wrong approach. Active training how genAI works and creates content is key. Plus constant monitoring of produced results and establishing control mechanisms esp. for customer facing use cases is key. Piloting, releasing first versions internally only, needs to happen now. Otherwise you miss the boat. Like you refer in your analogy of cloud adoption

Thanks for sharing. Realy impressive how AI is moving forward. Do you think companies with a restrictive IT policy have a competitive disadvantage? It reminds me a bit of cloud computing. Some companies took years until they adjusted and gained efficiencies.
