IMPROVING YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILE in 2024

Your LinkedIn profile is your digital brand. All else in the search being equal, the candidate with the stronger LinkedIn profile is going to get the contact from the recruiter or employer.  

Profile URL - One element many overlook is the ability to edit their profile URL. Before an edit, yours probably has your name and a short sequence of numbers after it. click “Edit public profile & URL” on the top right corner of your profile and shorten it to one that’ll look good on your resume.

Profile picture - You should absolutely include your face on your profile. The lack of a profile photo can create a negative impression. Be sure it’s high quality and close enough to make your face recognizable. If you have one, a professional headshot is nice.  Avoid full-body shots, anything with a cluttered background, or any photo that looks like a selfie.

Cover photo – Replace the default LinkedIn graphic. Your cover photo is a big part of a good profile and an important one when it comes to first impressions. Use a business-like photo from your field or industry, your city, your company logo, or even your (tidy) workspace. For years I have used a “pro quality” Chicago skyline photo taken at night from the Adler Planetarium Skyline Walk. I have a few versions, you’re welcome to them.

Headline – This is the main title under your name. Your headline is one of the first parts of your profile that someone will see, so it deserves attention. When I and other recruiters use our LinkedIn Recruiter accounts, the first thing displayed underneath your name is your headline. There are great examples highlighted on LinkedIn.

Location – You should have your location defined. For profiles anywhere near Chicago I recommend “Greater Chicago Area”, or “Chicago”. It is a frequently used filter when recruiters are looking for new talent for an open position.

About – This is the section for your professional summary, a critical element of the profile. Keep it somewhat short, one paragraph should do it. In one paragraph, you should summarize the types of industries you’ve worked in, areas of expertise, projects they are proud of, etc.

Activity – How active you are on LinkedIn starts to make a difference when someone is interested in your profile. Stay active. Engage with your network. Every like, share, comment, post, and written article, you’re building your personal brand.

Experience – This is the meat of the LinkedIn profile. Try to tell what you did on the job instead of just listing tasks. List accomplishments if you have work that you're proud of.

Education – The education section is often used by headhunters and recruiters as a filter when searching for potential people for open positions on LinkedIn. First, list only any secondary education if you have it. Don’t list your high school. There is also plenty of debate around whether or not to include the dates. My feeling is that a recent grad should have dates. If the education is a decade or more old, avoid any age bias and leave the dates off.

Licenses & certifications – Please only list the certifications that are relevant to your current occupation or industry. It showcases professional achievement and indicates your interest in continuous learning.

Skills and  Endorsements – This section doesn’t carry much weight for the reader of your profile but is picked up by the LinkedIn search algorithm. The strongest skills should go at the top of your list.

Recommendations – Having written recommendations can be powerful. If others in your network are endorsing your skills and experience it will certainly make your profile more interesting.
