Inclusion, for lots of reasons

Most of us can recall a time where we felt left out. It could have been in kindergarten when your best friend chose the new kid to befriend and left you behind. It could have been in high school when your shyness held you back from trying out for your favorite sport. It could have been that evening when you witnessed your coworkers laughing as they headed out of the office to happy hour without inviting you along. Or it could have been the time you learned second hand of a critical decision made by the boss that impacted you personally.

Whatever the circumstance, you remember the pain it caused as if it happened today. The psychological effect of exclusion is as emotionally painful as physical pain, as witnessed with the words we use to describe our feelings. You may agree; it stinks.

The opposite of exclusion is inclusion. When we feel included, we are connected. We are not only engaged; we feel a sense of well-being and owning success in the group. Inclusion actively involves others.

When we behave with inclusiveness, we welcome diverse points of view, encourage ownership in mission, and empower initiatives. Everyone gains.
