The Inconvenient Truth about Climate Change is Sea-Level Rise
SUPPLY CHAINS IN THE 21ST CENTURY:
Around 90% of all globally traded goods are reliant on maritime transport and containerization [1]. As we can see from the image above (a screen-shot from marine traffic) all major sea-ports are at sea-level. If we thought COVID-19 was a major disruption to global supply chains, climate change with its projected sea-level rise poses an even greater threat to our current global economy.
Circular City Design Challenge:
As we look to the future of supply chain, one of the biggest challenges we face is in transforming our current global industrial ecology into the next great industrial revolution—a global circular economy:
By investing in the natural infrastructure needed to climate-proof our port cities, we can begin to remediate toxic soil by economically de-industrializing our ports into more adaptive built environments that are destined to be inundated by rising sea-levels once the ice-sheets have melted—and they are melting.

2yBeing with the sea and becoming more conscious of what we do with resources at the assumed borders of development in transitional places could be locally based fascinating processes of human regeneration. Jakarta is not Alameda-Oakland nor Rotterdam like Dhaka, Bangladesh. It begins I believe with local people slowing down and becoming aware of "How are we here in this place together" and what is ours to do. Without this first level of grounding in earth based reality there is likely little integrity and solidarity happening as top down developnment projects and projections for viable futures. Replacing military bases with industrial parks, sea side hotel rows with parks while moving to higher ground may not help mankind take the necessary steps to renew our relationships to being in the processes of nature. It is a beautiful time to explore and take part in our transformation within nature based solutions.

2yWould be great to hear more about solutions that you see emerging to tackle this problem. Do you know if the US infrastructure plan includes fundings for this problem?
