How Indigo Plans Innovative Zero Waste Treatment at Indore Airport?

Indore - The Other Name for Sustainability in India

Indore has been leading the nation to embrace innovative waste management practices for the last few years. The city defines the ‘benchmark for India’s cleanest city’ after Surat.

It won the Swachh Survekshan 2023 award at Bharat Mandapam, hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The city has maintained this reputation for the past six years.

Once again, the city makes the nation proud for bagging the tag of cleanliness and sustainable waste treatment.

Recently, IndiGo successfully launched the Zero Waste Airport Project at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport of Indore.

Reasons To Launch Indore’s Zero Waste Airport Project: Key Agenda

  • Establish the habit of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover for further treatment
  • Minimize the carbon emission generated via various types of airport operations
  • Set a new waste regulation standard by turning waste into compost material
  • Generate revenue through recycling and separate dry waste from other waste categories
  • Highlight behavioural change for training and stakeholder engagement, and redefine sustainable waste management

Major Initiatives Highlighted in Zero Waste Airport Project

  • Embrace ‘Zero Waste’ practice by fostering - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover to process daily waste produced through airport operations
  • Treat around 750 kg of airport’s daily on-site waste without giving it a scope to create unplanned landfill
  • Using cutting-edge wet waste processing unit to transform organic waste into nutrient-rich compost material
  • Deploy the latest state-of-art facility to separate dry waste into 10 different categories for further recycling
  • Assure comprehensive state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to promote waste segregation practices and public awareness campaigns

Conclusion

Indore is one of those top Indian cities that aligns with India’s Net Zero emission goal and has been showing prominent results. The IndiGoReach’s CSR initiative to assure a carbon-emission free airport throws light on another innovative sustainable waste management plan shown by the city.
