What is Industry 5.0?

Industry 5.0 is an evolution of Industry 4.0, which brought about interconnected factories and data-driven processes. While Industry 4.0 has undoubtedly revolutionized manufacturing, it has also raised concerns about the role of humans in an increasingly automated world.

Industry 5.0 addresses these concerns by emphasizing a human-centric approach. It aims to strike a balance between technological progress and human well-being, recognizing that technology should serve people, not replace them. This means creating a work environment where humans and machines collaborate seamlessly, each leveraging their unique strengths.

The Three Pillars of Industry 5.0

The European Commission defines Industry 5.0 as having three core elements:

Human-centricity: Industry 5.0 emphasizes the importance of the human worker and aims to create a more inclusive and empowering workplace. This includes adapting technology to the needs of workers, promoting skills development, and ensuring a safe and fulfilling work environment.

Sustainability: Environmental responsibility is crucial in Industry 5.0. Companies are encouraged to adopt circular processes that minimize waste and pollution. This involves using resources efficiently, embracing renewable energy, and designing products with their entire life cycle in mind.

Resilience: In a rapidly changing world, Industry 5.0 recognizes the need for businesses to be adaptable and resilient. This means creating flexible production systems, diversifying supply chains, and anticipating future disruptions.

The six categories of enabling technologies for Industry 5.0:

  • Individualized Human-machine-interaction: These technologies are designed to connect humans with technologies and combine their strengths. Examples include multilingual speech and gesture recognition, human intention prediction, tracking technologies for employee mental and physical strain and stress, collaborative robots, augmented and virtual reality, and wearable technologies.
  • Bio-inspired technologies and smart materials: These technologies allow for recyclable materials with embedded sensors and enhanced features.
  • Digital twins and simulation: These technologies model entire systems in real-time. Examples include digital twins of products and processes, virtual simulation and testing, multi-scale dynamic modelling and simulation, simulation and measurement of environmental and social impact, cyber-physical systems and digital twins of entire systems, and planned maintenance.
  • Data transmission, storage, and analysis technologies: These technologies can handle data and system interoperability, while transmitting, storing, and analyzing data in an energy-efficient and secure manner.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Artificial intelligence can be used to detect causalities in complex, dynamic systems, resulting in actionable intelligence.
  • Technologies for energy efficiency, renewables, storage and autonomy: Because the technologies in the other categories require a great deal of energy, technologies are needed for energy efficiency and trustworthy autonomy.
