Innovating Secure Data Management: Insights from Amit Gupta’s Journey

In a recent podcast, Prof Bill Buchanan OBE FRSE , Professor of Applied Cryptography at Edinburgh Napier University, explored secure cross domain solutions with Amit Gupta , CEO of Acubed.it. Amit shared insights into the challenges and innovations driving the development of advanced technologies like the Cross-Domain Hybrid Application (CDHA) framework. Additionally, he discussed his personal journey and career experiences.  

Balancing Multiple Roles  

Amit Gupta wears many hats at Acubed.it. While his title is CEO, his role is far more diverse. Amit spends much of his time focused on software architecture and acting as a technical delivery manager. He works extensively with stakeholders and technical teams to address architectural issues and develop solutions. His responsibilities also extend to strategic marketing, hosting scrum meetings, sprint retrospectives, and architecture workshops. 

From Developer to industry Leader 

With over 25 years of experience, Amit's career began as a dedicated developer. In 2010, he had the opportunity to work on national security projects in the defence sector, providing him with insights into how the UK government and defence systems operate. His career took a significant turn in 2016 when he collaborated with the Cabinet Office and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) on a program requiring tier-two collaborations across the UK government. This experience highlighted a substantial gap in the industry, revealing opportunities for innovative solutions in secure data collaboration. 

Passion for Cryptography 

Amit’s passion for cryptography was ignited by encounters with security threats in the national defence sector. This drive continues to fuel collaborations aimed at developing advanced cryptographic solutions to tackle evolving security challenges. 

Cross Domain Hybrid Application (CDHA): Revolutionising Data Sharing 

The CDHA framework addresses traditional data sharing challenges by securely managing encrypted data across security domains. Its unique approach ensures data integrity and security, making it a revolutionary solution in secure information management. 

The Impact of Remote Work 

The shift to remote work has heightened data security risks, emphasising the need for robust security measures to safeguard sensitive information accessed remotely. Solutions like CDHA play a crucial role in enhancing data security in remote work environments. 

Discussing Security Risks and High-Trust Domains 

During the podcast, Amit also highlighted potential security risks associated with data aggregation and the necessity for sensitive data to be stored in high-trust domains. He stressed that when data is processed in low-trust environments, it becomes vulnerable to unauthorised access by hostile actors. Therefore, maintaining data in high-trust domains is critical for ensuring its security and integrity. 

Looking Ahead: Technological Innovations 

As cyber threats evolve, Amit emphasises the importance of preparing for post-quantum cryptography and exploring advanced cryptographic methods like homomorphic encryption. These innovations aim to future-proof data security and ensure strong protection against emerging threats.
