Innovation in Interpreting and Translation: Events to watch in November 2022
If you are as passionate as I am about interpreting training, new technologies and the latest developments in the interpreting and translation community, then I have good news for you: This November offers a number of exciting opportunities to keep up with recent innovations, get inspired and learn something new.
Digital transformation does not stop at the interpreting profession. From artificial intelligence to computer-assisted interpreting tools, remote interpreting to virtual reality, there are numerous futuristic developments which have been accelerated not least because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to cutting-edge translation and interpreting technologies, there are emerging trends in other areas such as accessibility, inclusive language or language technology ethics, which are closely linked to technological progress.
In order to get some insights into state-of-the-art developments in the field of interpreting and translation in a rapidly changing time, I would like to draw your attention to the following events:
The European Parliament's Science and Technology Options Assessment Panel (STOA) event aims to explore the research and development environment of language technologies in the context of EU multilingualism. Even if the workshop has already ended, you can still watch the recording and the various presentations via the link above.
#2022TEF will show how technology, coupled with the specialist skills and knowledge of translation professionals, is making the world a more interconnected, accessible and user-friendly place.
A variety of seminars, presentations and panels aimed at language teachers, language professionals and language enthusiasts. There will be also EU staff interpreters who will explain, among other things, what it is like to work in the post-Covid era and how to become an EU interpreter yourself.

One of the most eagerly awaited events of the language community this autumn is undoubtedly the "Innovation in Translation Summit 2022" hosted by Josh Goldsmith, Nora Diaz and Jost Zetzsche. This event will be more about translation, but can nevertheless be of great value to interpreters.
DG ITEC’s Innovation Week is designed to encourage and celebrate innovation at the European Parliament by providing Members and staff with insights into the most promising technological solutions and latest technological trends, such as Natural Language Processing models, Human - Machine interaction, mixed reality and Metaverse and more.
The 26th edition of DG SCIC’s annual flagship event, “SCIC Universities Conference,” will focus on the challenges for the future of the interpreting profession. Anyone interested in the conference will be able to follow the event online via web streaming and social media.
