Inside Milrem Robotics with Raul Rikk: what we do in the Science and Development department
In this short article, I'll try to give an overview of what the S&D department does at Milrem Robotics.
In the department, we have the Concept development and experimentation (CD&E) team, which deals with the creation of new operational concepts and robotics use cases, as well as advising clients. It can often seem that the introduction of robotics is self-explanatory, especially in the military field. In reality, this means creating an entirely new kind of capability, which requires a systematic approach and a complex development process together with the client. This is exactly the task of this team. Currently, the team provides services to the Italian Army with an aim to develop a clear path to how RAS (Robotic Autonomous Systems) technology can generate operational advantages when operating in urbanized environments.

The second team deals with European Union defence development projects related to the introduction of autonomous vehicles. Milrem Robotics participates in more than 10 different EU projects, the most significant of which is iMUGS (Integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System). The goal of this project is to create a common architecture for military manned-unmanned systems in order to address a large range of missions and to enable easy updates of functionalities: platforms, communication equipment, sensors, payloads and algorithms. Milrem Robotics has led and managed this EU consortium for over 3 years.
The third team deals with technological R&D projects. For example, a forest robot is being developed in cooperation with Estonian universities, the purpose of which is to plant trees. Now, preparations are underway for the development of a passive autonomous navigation system, which is a necessary solution in the military field. Such development projects produce new knowledge at the technology readiness level (TRL) 5 - 6, supporting future-oriented products development.
Our department consists of military, defence industry and technology experts. As the company is constantly growing, we are also looking for good people to join our team. We are currently recruiting a technology manager with strategic thinking who would be interested in leading the technological development work of large (also international) projects.
