Insight on Q2 2024 ASME BPV and Reshape Updates

Every quarter, CEI sends its top representatives to important industry meetings to ensure our solutions remain cutting-edge and compliant with evolving standards. In Q2 of 2024, our representatives, Tiradej Bunyarattaphantu, P.E. and Santiago Laris , EIT, took part in several ASME BPV Code Committee meetings held in Scottsdale, AZ.

These meetings were held by ASME and the National Board collectively at the same venue. This gathering facilitated a rich exchange of insights among ASME members and chief inspectors nationwide, fostering collaboration and unified progress in the field.

In this article, we provide an overview of the week-long meetings and the upcoming ASME code updates that emerged from these discussions.

Meeting Highlights: Updates from May 13-16

During the week of May 13-16, our representatives attended several ASME BPV Code Committee meetings, including:

May 13, 2024

  • Working Group on Design by Analysis (BPV VIII)
  • Subgroup on Welding Qualifications (BPV IX)
  • Subgroup on General Requirements (BPV IX)

May 14, 2024

  • SG Design (BPV VIII)
  • Committee of Welding, Brazing, and Plastic Fusing (BPV IX)

Key Takeaways & Notes

ASME Reshape Project

The ASME Reshape Project has continued with the implementation of moving the design rules to Division 2 but only for the 2025 code edition. The following paragraphs are being altered for common rules:

  • Mandatory Appendix 2
  • Mandatory Appendix 5
  • Mandatory Appendix 9
  • Mandatory Appendix 13
  • Mandatory Appendix 14
  • Mandatory Appendix 24
  • Non-mandatory Appendix EE

Division 2, Part 5 Rewrites for Fatigue Strength

The rewrite of Division 2, Part 5 harmonization and fatigue strength reduction factor continues. Additionally, a record item will introduce a new subsection in Division 1, reorganizing requirements for specific pressure vessels and components into a unified location.

BPV VIII General Requirements

Efforts are underway to eliminate exceptions for small piping and low-temperature boilers, expanding the code’s scope and applicability.

Santiago Laris , EIT has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and will soon be a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas. He has been a part of Paulin Research Group for 4 years and has attended his third ASME conference.

Idan Raz, Thanks for your questions. The reshape project is moving design rules out of D1 that share a common methodology in D2. This occurred in the 2023 code with UHX design rules being replaced by pointers to D2 4.18 and a similar change in Appendix 26 with pointers to D2 4.19. We cannot guarantee what the committee will pass between now and the publication deadline for 2025, but we believe most of these will make it. As for the FSRF changes, we'll follow up shortly.

Thanks for sharing this information. Can you please provide more details regarding the ASME Reshape Project? Is that means that App. 2,5,9,13,14,24 and EE will be removed from VIII-1 and will appear only in VIII-2? What changes should we expect in regards the FSRF?
