Inspiring vs. Stifling: The Leadership Choice That Defines Your Impact
Are you inspiring or stifling those you lead? This question is more than just a reflection—it's a call to action for every leader. Leadership is a journey filled with lessons learned through triumphs and challenges. Along my leadership path, I've encountered bumps and bruises, but I've also experienced moments of clarity and growth by observing and modeling the behaviors of effective leaders.
One of the most pivotal influences on my leadership style came from my time under my VP of Sales mentorship. Leading a team of 42 sales managers was no small feat, but the lessons I learned under his guidance have continued to serve as the bedrock of my approach to leadership. These insights are not just tips—they're treasures I continue to draw upon in every role I've held since. Here are three key principles from my treasure chest of inspiration that I’m grateful for and continue to apply today.
1. Allow Others to Fail – The Growth Opportunity
One of the most counterintuitive yet powerful lessons I learned is the importance of allowing others to fail. It can be tempting to step in and prevent mistakes, especially when the stakes are high. However, failure is often the greatest teacher. When you give your team the space to explore uncharted territory, even if it means stumbling along the way, you offer them the invaluable opportunity to grow.
💡 Tip: Encourage your team to take risks, experiment, and learn from their mistakes. Be genuine in your communication, and let them know that failure is a stepping stone to success, not a dead-end. This approach builds resilience and fosters a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
2. Understand and Support Diverse Learning Styles
Every person on your team is unique, not just in their skills and experiences but in how they receive process, and respond to information. As a leader, it's crucial to recognize and support these differences. Some team members may thrive on detailed instructions, while others prefer a more hands-on, trial-and-error approach.
🔍 Tip: Take the time to understand each team member's learning style. This might mean offering a variety of training methods or providing different types of feedback. By tailoring your approach to meet their needs, you empower them to perform at their best. This personalized support can be the key to unlocking each team member’s full potential.
3. Recognize Growth at All Levels
Recognition is more than just a pat on the back—it's a powerful motivator that can inspire continued growth and effort. Focusing on big wins is easy, but acknowledging small victories is just as important. These moments of recognition can fuel your team’s motivation and reinforce positive behaviors.
🏆 Tip: Make it a point to celebrate growth at every level, whether a significant milestone or a minor improvement. Publicly acknowledge these achievements to boost morale and encourage others to strive for excellence. When team members feel valued and recognized for their efforts, they are more likely to remain engaged and committed to their work.
BONUS: Model the Behavior You Want to Experience
Leadership isn't just about telling others what to do—it's about showing them through your actions. The behavior you model sets the tone for your entire team. If you want to inspire trust, collaboration, and excellence, you must embody these qualities yourself.
🔑 Tip: Lead by example in every aspect of your work. Whether you maintain a positive attitude during tough times, are transparent in your communication, or demonstrate a strong work ethic, your actions will speak louder than any words. When your team sees you practicing what you preach, they are more likely to follow suit.
