This week’s 5 top stories you can't miss:

1️⃣ [INNOVATION] Christmas comes early at OpenAI: Sam Altman teased twelve days of “shipmas,” with the first major drop expected sometime today. “Each weekday, we will have a livestream with a launch or demo, some big ones and some stocking stuffers,” the OpenAI CEO wrote. While it’s anyone’s guess what will be announced, here is what we could expect:

  • Spotlight on Sora: Sora, OpenAI’s text-to-video AI, could revolutionize AI-generated video content. Currently in a research preview, its public launch could redefine creative possibilities. Sora’s potential launch raises questions about AI ethics and the implications for creative industries, as leaks highlight concerns over training data usage.
  • Anticipated Features: Speculated updates include enhancements to ChatGPT, expanded reasoning models o1, improved voice modes, and possible previews of advanced models like GPT-5o.
  • The event intensifies competition, with rivals like Google’s Veo AI and Amazon’s Olympus advancing their video AI efforts.

2️⃣3D Models] DeepMind and World Labs have simultaneously released groundbreaking AI platforms for generating interactive 3D environments from images, marking a significant advancement in world-generation technology.

  • World Labs' new system creates fully explorable 3D environments from single images, allowing users to navigate beyond the original viewpoint while maintaining visual consistency throughout the generated space using standard keyboard and mouse controls.
  • The technology includes sophisticated features like real-time camera effects, interactive lighting controls, and animation options, making it compatible with both photographs and AI-generated images from various sources.
  • These developments have broader implications for both creative industries and AI advancement, as they could revolutionize content creation for games and virtual experiences while helping AI systems better understand physics and navigation in realistic environments.

3️⃣[LLM] Amazon has launched Nova, a new AI product line that creates text, images, and videos.

  • Nova includes multiple text models of varying power, plus tools for making images (Canvas) and videos (Reel), with the top model outperforming major competitors.
  • The text models work in 200+ languages and can handle very long texts, while the video tool currently makes 6-second clips with plans for longer videos.
  • Amazon plans to add more features in 2025, aiming to become a major player in consumer AI technology.

4️⃣ [Self-Learning] Google DeepMind has revealed a new AI learning system called 'Boundless Socratic Learning' that helps AI systems improve on their own through language interactions.

  • The system works by having AI agents play "language games" with each other, creating their own training exercises and measuring how well they do, without needing humans to guide them.
  • It can learn in three different ways: basic input/output learning, choosing which games to play, and potentially even changing its own code to get better.
  • This research is important because it shows how AI might learn and improve on its own in the future, though keeping AI aligned with human goals during self-improvement remains a challenge.

5️⃣ [Medicine] Scientists at Arc Research Institute have created Evo, an AI model that can read and write genetic code with remarkable precision, trained on 2.7 million microbial genomes.

  • Evo is unique because it learns from three types of genetic material at once (DNA, RNA, and proteins), and has already shown it can design genetic tools and predict how DNA changes affect bacteria.
  • The model can write extremely long genetic sequences, though these can't yet form living organisms, and the researchers carefully avoided including any human-affecting viruses in its training for safety.
  • This "ChatGPT for DNA" could speed up research and drug development significantly, but also raises important questions about the responsible use of technology that can write genetic code so easily.
