The connected devices we use in the workplace, such as smartphones, watches or industrial robots, provide us with an enormous amount of data that, if used properly, can help increase process efficiency and reduce waste.
In general, there are many benefits to adopting Internet of Things technologies in the workplace. However, if we focus on employee productivity, we can see how such connections offer support in several areas. In fact, the IoT makes it possible to:
- Automate processes: connected sensors enable RPA software to automate certain repetitive or tedious tasks, allowing employees to focus on tasks that require more cognitive input.
- Track and manage resources: IoT enables the geo-location and management of company resources (equipment, vehicles, inventory), improving the overall efficiency of certain activities. In large factories, for example, workers used to waste time searching for equipment. With simple GPS sensors, the location of an item can be identified instantly.
- Ensure workers’ health and safety: IoT devices have helped create a healthy and comfortable working environment, thanks to sensors that can detect air quality, temperature or noise levels. In addition, if we take construction sites as an example, we can see how wearable devices play a key role in monitoring the health of workers. Particularly in emergencies, the use of alarms and GPS sensors enables rapid and targeted intervention.
- Communicate and collaborate in real-time: video calls, online meetings and shared folders in the cloud are just some of the possibilities of connected devices. A team can connect and work on a project remotely without physical constraints. In addition, mobile IoT devices can provide remote access to critical business information, allowing employees to work more flexibly and efficiently.
- Optimize business processes: by collecting and analyzing data in real-time, we can identify inefficiencies, reduce downtime and improve resource planning. For example, IoT sensors in the supply chain can track shipments in real-time, reducing delays and optimizing inventory management.
