Interview Tips For The Interviewer

Interview Tips For The Interviewer

As HR Specialists that deal with people on a daily basis, we know and understand that it takes a lot to determine if a person is the right fit for the job! Not many people talk about how your job on the other side of the interview desk is also crucial. But today, iHR’s got your back! Here are some tips that will help you in your next interview on the other side of the desk.

One of the most important things you need to remember is that in as much as you are looking for someone to fill a role, they will also be deciding whether or not they want to work for your company. So you have 2 important tasks: to make a good impression on the candidate and to get the information you need about their skills, experience, and personality.

Here are our top 5 tips to guide you!

1. Go in with a list of questions directly related to the job’s responsibilities

Use the job description that you posted with the job ad or use the list of key responsibilities that the person will be expected to perform in the position. And if there are other employees in your company that will interact with the position on a daily basis make sure to ask for their input.

2. Ask Behavioral Questions

This is a great way to get a handle on who the candidate is and whether or not they will fit into your organization. Ask for specific examples of past performance and behavior, with questions like “tell me about a time when you overcame a challenge and how you did it…” Previous successes are a good indicator of future performance.

3. Review the Candidate’s CV Before the Interview

This may seem obvious, but it’s important. This will show the candidate that you’ve taken the time to ensure a productive interview. This step will also save you time - no going over questions that have been answered in the CV!

4. Watch Nonverbal Signals

Just as you’re looking for eye contact and appropriate dress, the candidate is looking for those unspoken signals from you. Keep your tone of voice appropriate and professional. Clearly articulate the job’s duties and the company’s mission. Dress as you normally would and pay attention to manners. You’re a representative of your company in that room, so make sure your actions reflect this.

5. Follow Up

Whether you call, or email, it’s important to let candidates know whether they got the job or not. It is not only courteous and professional, but it also gives the interview process closure for both sides.

The hiring process is hardly a walk in the park, and the job interview may very well be the trickiest part. But the good news is that you have an expert who’s willing and ready to help.
