Introducing… Evosep Biosystems
Welcome to the eighth edition of #TheStartupSequence and thank you for reading! Join me here on a bi-weekly basis, as I discover and discuss the Startup organisations creating the future of Genomics, Proteomics and Spatial Biology.
This week, I discuss robust and high-throughput proteomics with Evosep Biosystems founder Ole Vorm . Although a fairly young company, their team have decades of experience in the proteomics space, including senior leaders Morten Bern , Nicolai Bache , Erik Verschuuren and Christian Ravnsborg . Founded in 2016 in Denmark, Evosep Biosystems are on a mission to improve quality of life and patient care by radically innovating how protein based clinical diagnostics are performed.
Their flagship product, the Evosep One , is a plug-and-play liquid chromatography platform designed with user-friendliness at its core. It delivers outstanding robustness and impressive throughput, achieved by the application of Evotips - disposable trap columns that speed up sample loading and significantly reduce carry-over.
They’re financially backed originally by the Danish Growth Fund and now also by Life Science investment firm, Novo Holdings , who this year injected a substantial $40m to further Evosep’s technology and application portfolio for clinical proteomics.
“Evosep is a scientific leader within proteomics and the team has been providing innovation to the field for decades. This investment underscores Novo Holdings’ commitment to supporting companies developing cutting-edge science that makes a real difference to patients and society” stated Novo Holdings’ Stephen van Helden
Evosep are all about sharing knowledge and optimising workflows. Founder Ole Vorm shares his experience over the last 7 years, and the success and struggles of building Evosep:
What struggles have you faced so far?
"We’ve been very fortunate with Evosep and not experienced any major setbacks or headwinds. This is partly because the senior team is very experienced and we have worked together for many years and complement each other well. This means we have been operationally efficient and able to counter any issues quite decisively. But alos we have a very strong vision of “ruggedizing LC-MS based proteomics and bringing it all the way into the clinic” to make a significant difference to precision medicine. That is a tall order so I suspect we still have our struggles ahead of us."
What would you attribute to your success?

!We founded the company in March 2016 and launched our primary product in September 2017 and that is exceedingly fast. As mentioned, many of us have been in the field a long time so that is what enabled the fast progress and the great achievement. But in addition, in many regards, the system performs better than origanlly anticipated and coupled with our new automated workflows, the quick progress towards the clinic seems likely to continue. It is too early to declare victory, but we (and some of our customers) are now involved in dozens of translational proteomics studies, so we expect it is only a matter of months before we see the first clinical centers use LC-MS based proteomics data when treating patients and the first pharma companies use it for monitoring clinical trials. So far, so good."
What advice would you give to others starting out in the space?
"One thing we entrepreneurs tend to under-invest in is planning and thinking really hard ahead of starting. But strategic marketing and the business model is really worth several months of labor ahead of anything else. Planning is cheap and execution is usually very costly. So having a really well tested understanding of the market one tries to service along with how things will play out makes execution a lot smoother and cheaper. This sounds obvious of course, but what I have seen with Evosep is a great advantage from a level of analysis and planning that is much much deeper than I would have gone to in the past. You cannot overthink prior to starting, but once you start executing, you can then move faster."
In the spirit of knowledge sharing, you can join Evosep at their “ELEVATE EFFICIENCY: THE POWER OF AUTOMATION” webinar on November 9th at 4pm CET, the essential guide to get started with a fast and efficient, automated sample preparation protocol – a gamechanger in high-throughput proteomics.
