Investing in Golf Properties

Investing in Golf Properties

The number of top golf resorts available is extensive, spanning from the American Heartland and the picturesque coasts of the Caribbean to the towering peaks of Europe, the majestic landscapes of Asia, and the tranquil beauty of the South Pacific.

Virtually every corner of the globe offers a selection of premier stay-and-play experiences for golf enthusiasts.

Investing in properties within golf resorts appeals to a diverse range of individuals and groups. High-net-worth individuals seeking luxury vacation homes or retirement properties are attracted to the exclusive amenities and serene surroundings offered by golf resort communities.

Additionally, golf enthusiasts often see these properties as ideal investments, providing them with convenient access to world-class golf courses right at their doorstep. Furthermore, they recognize the potential for lucrative returns through rental income, as golf resorts attract a steady stream of tourists and vacationers throughout the year.

Cyprus

Cyprus has started developing its golf tourism infrastructure and promoting its courses over the past two decades. While it may not have achieved its recognition as one of the premier golf resort destinations globally, Cyprus boasts several high-quality golf courses and resorts.

The initial wave of property investors in golf resorts in Cyprus consisted mainly of British citizens, beginning in the early 2000s. The majority of the purchasers were avid golf enthusiasts. They were later joined by investors from various countries across the globe, who simply discovered the majestic beauty of the location, high rental yields, and the tranquility that they were enjoying the most.

With the existence today of 2 running golf courses, there are a few more that are currently under development across the island. These developments offer a range of properties available for purchase or rental.

Among these courses is the multi-award-winning 18-hole championship golf course at Aphrodite Hills Resort, designed by acclaimed architect Cabell Robinson. It has attained the highest standard recognition in golf – the PGA National Cyprus.

With continued development and marketing efforts, Cyprus has the potential to achieve greater recognition as a top golf resort destination in the future.

Montenegro - a country to invest in today.

It's a well-established fact that the development of infrastructure projects inevitably leads to price increases and offers significant potential for investors. This sentiment aptly applies to Lustica Bay and the promising future of golf tourism in Montenegro.

Montenegro, traditionally not renowned as a golfing destination, has been actively developing its golf infrastructure in recent years. While no fully operational golf courses exist in the country currently, several projects are in different stages of development.

One outstanding project is the Luštica Bay Golf Course, situated near the town of Tivat along the Adriatic coast. Designed by golf legend Gary Player, this course is part of a larger resort development and is anticipated to deliver a challenging and picturesque golfing experience once completed.

“I was amazed by the beauty of the property, wildlife, and natural terrain with the incredible views over the Adriatic Sea,” said Gary Player. “That’s something quite rare these days for a golf course design project, being able to see the water from almost all of the holes. And from the other holes, golfers will have breathtaking views of the Kotor Bay and the mountains beyond. No doubt it will be a spectacular course when it opens.”

As Montenegro continues to invest and develop its golf tourism industry, more courses may be developed in the future, thus making the country an exciting destination for golf enthusiasts seeking new and unique playing experiences.

Turkey

Turkey can also be claimed as one of the most popular and at the same time cost-effective destinations of the Mediterranean area with the highest concentration of golf clubs and resorts, particularly in and around Belek.

Situated on the Turkish Riviera, renowned for its breathtaking beauty, this region has undergone rapid development over the past 15 years, emerging as one of the country's premier tourist destinations. With numerous blue flag beaches lining its coastline and luxurious all-inclusive hotels, it offers an enticing holiday experience.

The comparatively low property prices, in contrast to other Mediterranean and European destinations, have attracted a significant influx of investors to Antalya and Belek's real estate sector.

While owning property within the golf resorts is not possible as they are part of hotel chains, the market offers an abundance of projects surrounding the resorts, providing residents with a wide selection of apartments, villas, and luxury estates equipped with premium amenities and infrastructure.

Some of Turkey's finest golf courses include The Montgomerie Maxx Royal, Regnum Carya Golf & Spa Resort, Antalya Golf Club, and Cornelia Golf Club, Kaya Palazzo Golf Resort.

Portugal

As the legendary Cliff Richard once said, "I've got two places I like to be. Portugal is one."

Indeed, Portugal's allure extends far beyond its historical sites and picturesque landscapes. For those seeking a sanctuary amidst refined living, Portugal beckons with open arms.

Golf has been on the rise in Portugal since 1890 and was brought by a few members of the British expatriate community, living in the area.  Spearheaded by the visionary Sir Henry Cotton, the Algarve region emerged as a premier golfing destination with the establishment of the now world-famous Penina Resort Championship course.

Today Portugal boasts over 100 golf courses and it has become one of the best golf destinations in the world with a wide selection of quality, price, breathtaking locations, and exceptional service.

Quinta do Lago is one of the most exclusive golf and residential estates nestling in nearly 2.000 acres of countryside and pine forests in the Algarve. Since its creation in 1972, Quinta do Lago has won several awards for excellence and it has been selected several times as the location for the 'Algarve Open' (previously named the 'Portuguese Open'). It symbolizes quality tourism, luxury, leisure, and outstanding natural beauty.

To own a property near Quinta do Lago is a matter of owning a masterpiece of luxury and leisure in the very best of the Algarve. This is a perfect place to own for those looking for a luxury lifestyle, a place to call home for those who appreciate the finer things in life.

Greece

Until the end of the 20th century, Greece wasn't well-known as a golf destination. Only a few Greeks were familiar with golf, and there were limited, basic golf courses across the country. It wasn't until the beginning of the 21st century that some Greek golf resorts began receiving recognition and winning awards. This helped establish Greece as an up-and-coming golfing destination.

The origins of golf in Greece date back to 1950 when an American diplomat visited Athens and inquired about the Greek Prime Minister's interest in golf. Although golf wasn't widespread among Greeks at the time, there was a desire to impress, leading to the establishment of the first golf course in Glyfada by 1962. Mr. Karamanlis became closely associated with golf in Greece and is credited with bringing the sport to public attention.

In the 2000s, a fresh chapter in Greek golf history began, led by two forward-thinking businessmen and close friends, who were passionate about golf. They saw the potential for golf tourism in Greece and aimed to elevate the country as a top golfing destination by investing in cutting-edge courses in their own regions. These individuals were Theodore Vassilakis, who chaired Aegean Airlines and the company behind Crete Golf Club, and Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos, the visionary behind Costa Navarino.

Today, the most popular golf courses encompass various regions of Greece and its islands.

  • Peloponnese: Hosting four championship-level golf courses within the Costa Navarino development, renowned as Greece's premier golfing destinations.
  • Athens: Featuring an 18-hole world-class course situated in Glyfada.
  • Corfu: Providing an 18-hole golf course nestled in the scenic Ropa Valley.
  • Rhodes: Housing an 18-hole golf course in Afandou, designed by renowned golf course architect Donald Harradine.
  • Crete: Offering a 9-hole golf course in Elounda and an 18-hole course in Hersonisos, recently renovated.
  • Halkidiki: Home to a world-class 18-hole golf course within the Porto Carras Grand Resort, famous for hosting major international championships.

Just a decade ago, it would have been unimaginable for Greece to be favored by top golfers worldwide as one of their preferred golfing destinations.

Today more and more people start choosing golf as a sport and leisure activity. More and more people are turning to golf as a means of recreation, relaxation, and physical activity, that also allows networking and bonding with others.
