The Invisible Struggle Of Business Owners
'Business Owners are often Isolated'

The Invisible Struggle Of Business Owners

When I first became a business advisor over a decade ago, I never really liked the term "business coach." I felt it was too ambiguous and often associated with individuals who had strong coaching skills but lacked substantial business acumen. In hindsight, this perception may have been somewhat unfounded.

I was very focused, first and foremost, on moving the needle of my clients' businesses. It was crucial to achieve tangible business results. I didn't want to be seen merely as a motivator, providing a feel-good factor that didn’t deliver long-term business success. Even though I believed I had a high emotional IQ, was a good listener, socially skilled, and empathetic, I prioritised concrete outcomes.

Looking back over many years of working with small and medium-sized business owners, it has become clear that success stems from a blend of business advisory and coaching. The ability to collaborate towards successful business outcomes remains paramount, but possessing strong coaching skills is what fosters long-term successful relationships and thriving businesses.

At BSP Advisory Group, we emphasize the importance of recognising the myriad challenges business owners face, both personally and professionally, in running a successful SME. It has become a significant part of our training to understand and address these issues comprehensively.

The Hidden Challenges of Business Ownership

Many business owners feel isolated, regardless of their business's success. A common theme is the inability to celebrate achievements due to a persistent fear that it could all end tomorrow. This lack of confidence in the future prevents them from enjoying their successes.

Business owners often face stress from a multitude of issues, ranging from staff management to spousal and family business interactions, financial concerns, and navigating the general economy. The pressure of understanding how to step back or exit successfully adds another layer of anxiety. Many feel consumed by their business, struggling to find time away or, at the very least, time not spent thinking about their business. This can lead to anxiety, depression, and a general lack of lifestyle enjoyment, even when things are going well.

The Holistic Role of Business Advisors

Good business advisors must be attuned to all these challenges. They need to recognise when spirits need lifting and, more importantly, know how to help create a sense of fulfilment and balance for their clients. This requires a deep understanding of both business mechanics and personal dynamics.

Effective advisors do more than just provide strategic business insights; they offer emotional support and practical solutions to alleviate stress and foster a positive outlook. They help business owners set realistic goals, celebrate milestones, and build resilience against uncertainties. This holistic approach ensures that business owners not only achieve professional success but also enjoy personal well-being.

Creating a Balanced and Fulfilled Life

One of the most impactful ways to achieve balance as a business owner is by developing systems that allow for effective delegation, better time management, and space for personal interests and family. Clear strategies for growth, succession, or exit that align with the owner's life goals are essential for long-term success and satisfaction.

A well-structured business not only improves operational efficiency but also enables owners to step back occasionally without the fear that everything will fall apart. This approach involves planning for the future and ensuring that all aspects of the business are running smoothly, from staff management to financial planning.

Additionally, maintaining a work-life balance helps prevent burnout, which is a common issue among business owners. Creating a supportive work environment, setting realistic goals, and celebrating milestones can significantly contribute to a healthier, more productive business atmosphere. This comprehensive support system improves business performance and enhances the overall quality of life for business owners.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the success of a business is not solely measured by its financial performance but also by the well-being of its owner. Understanding the personal struggles and ambitions of business owners and addressing them is crucial for sustainable growth and satisfaction.

By focusing on both the business and personal aspects, owners can navigate challenges more effectively and lead more balanced, fulfilling lives. The comprehensive approach to managing a business—considering both operational efficiency and personal well-being—ensures long-term success and happiness.

Through structured planning, effective delegation, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, business owners can achieve professional success and personal fulfilment, contributing to a thriving business and a better quality of life.

At BSP Advisory Group, we are committed to this holistic approach, recognising that true success is measured not just in financial terms but in the overall well-being and satisfaction of our clients.

Great article Phil ... this is the game we have signed up for! It is really cool when it all come together for the business owner(s), employees and the business advisor which in my definition clearly includes the coaching dimension!
