The International Olympic Committee (IOC) acknowledges the accelerating development of digital technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), as a critical component in modernizing sports and the Olympic Games. The Olympic AI Agenda is part of the broader Olympic Agenda 2020+5, which highlights digitalization as a key trend influencing society, and it emphasizes the potential of AI to transform sport by making it more accessible, efficient, and engaging while also acknowledging the risks and ethical considerations involved.

But what are the ambition and guiding principles?

The IOC's vision is to inspire positive change across global sport by embracing AI to support solidarity, universality, equal access, and sustainability. And there are five guiding principles:

-        Foster integrity: maintain transparency, responsibility, and safety.

-        Improve access and fairness: leverage technology to reduce barriers to participation.

-        Create memorable experiences: use AI for personalized fan engagement.

-        Honor traditions: balance innovation with Olympic values.

3. Optimizing Olympic and paralympic games operations with a focus on sustainability: AI can streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability in event management.

We can see both the IOC and global trends emphasize the importance of ethical AI use and governance, aiming to mitigate risks and ensure AI aligns with societal values.

And when it comes to decision support,  AI tools are increasingly used for data-driven decision-making, enhancing productivity and accuracy in various sectors. What areas will be important in the future of sport?

Here are some areas I believe AI will add value for the future of sport, some of them are already implemented in Paris 2024 Olympic & Paralympic Games and most likely all of them will grow quicky. It is not an exhaustive list of ideas, but helps understand the growth areas.

-        Fan engagement and Augmented Reality experiences: Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR): leveraging AR and VR to create immersive experiences for fans who cannot attend events physically, allowing them to virtually "attend" events, interact with athletes, and explore venues. AI-driven content creation: using AI to generate dynamic and interactive content such as highlights, analyses, and behind-the-scenes footage, which can be tailored to individual viewer preferences.

 -        Health monitoring and injury prevention: AI-powered wearables that provide real-time health monitoring, predicting and preventing injuries by analyzing biomechanical data are a gold mine. AI is also helpful on mental health support: AI-driven platforms for monitoring mental health, providing personalized mental wellness programs and interventions to athletes. We can also think more long term about health tracking implementing AI systems to track athletes' health over time, providing insights into the long-term impacts of high-performance sports on the body and mind.

 -        Data analytics and performance prediction: already happening partly in football, with strong future, you can start predicting analytics for performance using AI to predict future performance trends and outcomes based on historical data, helping coaches and athletes make informed decisions. That works also on AI-enhanced scouting to analyse athletes' performance data globally, identifying emerging talents and trends in sports. When it comes to competitions, real-time strategy optimization utilizing AI to analyse opponents' strategies in real-time, providing coaches with actionable insights during competitions.

 -        Accessibility and inclusion in sports: imagine AI for adaptive sports or para sports developing AI technologies to enhance adaptive sports for athletes with disabilities, such as AI-driven prosthetics or communication tools. Same for language and cultural inclusivity using AI for real-time translation and cultural adaptation in sports content and communication, making events more accessible to diverse audiences. When it comes to sport training, we can also think about AI-powered platforms offering tailored training programs that consider physical, cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic differences.

 -        Event security and safety: AI in security surveillance utilizing AI for enhanced surveillance and threat detection at events, improving safety for athletes and spectators. Cybersecurity, what a topic, implementing AI solutions to protect against cyber threats targeting the digital infrastructure of the Olympics, ensuring data privacy and security. Crowd Management, using AI algorithms for real-time crowd management and emergency response, optimizing safety measures during large-scale events.

 -         Sustainability beyond venues: AI in supply chain management by leveraging AI to optimize supply chains for events, reducing waste and environmental impact. Sustainable transportation solutions: AI-driven models to optimize transportation logistics, reducing carbon footprints and enhancing sustainability. Energy Management Systems: using AI for smart energy management systems across all Olympic facilities, promoting renewable energy sources and efficient usage.
