IoT Platforms for Home Automation

IoT Platforms for Home Automation

One colleague recently said this, and I agree: "If you want to be in smart home business, you have to be in the monitored security business."

The Internet of Things (IoT) is proliferating, and we're starting to see more and more smart devices pop up in our homes around the world. The problem with these smart devices is that they don't always work together, or frankly, aren't very smart themselves.

Enter IoT platforms. These platforms promise to bring all your smart devices under one hood and make them work together. IoT platforms take care of the heavy lifting – your devices need to connect to it via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or better, a cellular connection to provide uninterrupted service.

A compatible product, such as a smart light bulb, still works independently but also intelligently interacts with other products on your network so you can control them all from one central hub. Without an IoT platform, you'll need to control each device manually.

For example, if your security camera is triggered by motion detection and sends you an alert, it might also turn on the lights in that area of your home. The IoT platform then takes this data and provides other actions such as unlocking doors or turning off the TV so you don't get an alert at night.

As a consumer, you can benefit from IoT platforms by having a smart home that is easier to control and offers greater comfort and security. It's also cheaper – instead of buying separate products for each feature or automation you want, you only use one platform to connect multiple devices under one system.

Your best bet when it comes to an IoT platform is to find a reputable, well-known brand that has been around for a while. Look for platforms with excellent compatibility with lots of products from different brands and great security features, so your personal data remains protected.

Most importantly, please research a specific platform before you buy it. Ensure they offer the features and compatibility that you're looking for. Check out the manufacturer's website and social media pages to see what customers are saying – how long have they been using it? Are there any issues with connectivity or bugs?

Remember, an IoT platform isn't just a hub – it's a decision between convenience and affordability. You can choose to use individual innovative products to save money, but you'll likely regret the decision when you must wade through an instruction manual every time you want to turn on your coffee maker.

On the other hand, if affordability isn't a concern and ease-of-use is the top priority, then spending more on an advanced IoT platform may be right for you. Be sure to shop around and do your research before you buy. Choosing between a professional install or DIY may be at the top of your decision matrix when selecting a vendor. No matter which method you choose, make sure to use a professional monitoring company to protect your investment and reach true peace of mind.
