ISRO'S NEXT-GEN LAUNCH VEHICLE: A LEAP INTO THE FUTURE OF SPACE EXPLORATION
In the ever-evolving realm of space exploration, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has set its sights on the future with the development of the Next-Gen Launch Vehicle (NGLV). Revealed by ISRO Chairman S. Somanath during the Engineers Conclave 2022, this cutting-edge launch vehicle is poised to replace the iconic Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and usher in a new era of cost-efficiency, versatility, and technological advancement.
The NGLV is envisioned as a three-stage to orbit, reusable heavy-lift vehicle, designed to carry payloads of up to ten tonnes to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO). One of the key innovations lies in its semi-cryogenic propulsion system, utilizing refined kerosene as fuel paired with liquid oxygen (LOX) as an oxidizer. This strategic choice not only enhances efficiency but also ensures a more economical approach to space exploration.
ISRO recognizes the importance of a robust payload capability, aiming for at least ten tonnes to GTO and twice that for Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The emphasis on reusability highlights ISRO's commitment to sustainable and cost-effective space missions. Chairman Somanath emphasizes that while the payload capability may be lower during reusable missions, the overall impact on space exploration efficiency is substantial.
NGLV stands out with its simple, robust design, fostering bulk manufacturing, modularity in systems, sub-systems, and stages, and minimal turnaround time. The versatility of the design opens avenues for a myriad of applications, including launching communication satellites, deep space missions, future human spaceflight, and cargo missions.

Addressing the inevitable retirement of the PSLV, Chairman Somanath assures that it will continue operations as long as there is a commercial demand for its services. While technological advancements dictate the lifecycle of launch vehicles, the PSLV's legacy as the 'trusted workhorse' will endure, adapting to the evolving needs of the space industry.
ISRO recognizes the importance of developing a sustainable business model for the NGLV, encompassing commercial satellite launches and national missions. Chairman Somanath emphasizes the crucial role of industry participation from the inception, leveraging ISRO's knowledge and expertise to transform the NGLV into a national asset.
ISRO's venture into the development of the Next-Gen Launch Vehicle marks a pivotal moment in India's space exploration journey. As the PSLV gracefully bows out, the NGLV steps onto the stage, promising a future where innovation, efficiency, and sustainability converge to propel India's space ambitions to new heights. With a strategic focus on technological evolution and industry collaboration, ISRO paves the way for a brighter, more dynamic era of space exploration.
