Issue #16 A Leader’s Most Powerful Question: What Would You Do Differently?

Leaders, asking and answering great questions is essential for self-awareness and unlocking our full potential. As we grow in self-awareness, we come to recognize two key truths: while we may have many answers to the questions we ask, we don’t have all the answers. And even if we’re the smartest person in the room at times, we’re not the only smart person in the room.

One of the most powerful ways to gain trust, respect, and fresh perspectives to improve your organization is by asking this simple yet impactful question: “If you were in charge of the organization, what would you do differently?”

Why ask this question?

When you ask this question, you’re inviting your team into an open discussion to tackle challenges you, as a leader, may already recognize while also uncovering issues you might not yet be aware of. It opens the lines of communication, showing your team that their insights are valuable and their voices matter. At the same time, it demonstrates your humility and willingness to learn from those around you which builds trust.

Asking this question also gives others the freedom to share their ideas without the fear of “one-upping” the leader. It’s a question designed to foster a collaborative and innovative environment where everyone’s input is valued.

Leaders, can you ask your team this question? Can you ask it without holding a grudge or becoming defensive? Imagine the impact in your next staff meeting or one-on-one feedback session if you were to genuinely pose this question. What new ideas, perspectives, or solutions might emerge? What trust could be built simply by demonstrating your willingness to listen?

Your growth, and the growth of your team, may hinge on asking this question. Be sincere. Be courageous. Asking what others would do differently if they were in your position not only provides them with a fresh perspective on the organization but also creates an opportunity to develop the next generation of leaders who have been waiting for their chance to step up.
