Part 2: Network
I am hearing from numerous people who are navigating this crazy market that it takes a village to find leads and to keep spirits and emotions in check. Within this section of the round-up I will try to identify networking events, resources or ideas/best practices to grow and strengthen your network.
First… an event to get on your calendar
Thu, Feb 29, 2024, 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM PT: ICology Presents: The Job Seeker Support Team
The job market for internal comms pros is a bit of a roller coaster and iCology is here to help! Taking tips from our members-only chats, we’re bringing the good vibes and helpful tips to LinkedIn. If you’re looking for your next gig or available as a job seeker ally, join iCology for an in-depth conversation about the hiring landscape and how we can support each other.
Second… a best practice.
Finding your tribe of fellow job seekers and/or peers to add momentum to your search.
Today, I am spotlighting a group of creative and marketing professionals who are branding themselves as We are open to work. They have a page on LinkedIn and a webpage … and have begun to promote their individual members.
As the #weareopentowork about section explains “once upon a time we worked together, creating a bond that endured even when our professional path diverged. now we are collaborating to help one another finding our next big thing. we are open to work and ready to take your business to the next level. let's chat.
If you are a brand looking for talent, check them out or reach out to (1) Jo Gruszka | LinkedIn who I know would be willing to share more about their members and offerings. If you are a fellow job seeker, take inspiration and ask yourself:
This is just one example, and I will try to spotlight others in other upcoming issues. So, if you have best practices in this space, please drop me a note if you are willing to share.
Part 3: Learn (or Get Inspired)
This week there were a few posts that intersected on finding clarity on your core values and purpose (as well as the range emotions that come with career transition) got me thinking so I am going to deviate from purely educational resources… and focus on these three instead:
1. This Week post from Christie Smith’s Hello Friday posts
I’ve mentioned Christie’s weekly posts in past roundups as she always seems to get me thinking and this week is no exception. Christie takes on the flood of emotions that one feels when making a big career transition – either forced or made on our own. These emotions can include grief. As she explains “When we start a new job or change our careers, the choice to pursue one path may come at the cost of others. When we lose a job and it’s not our choice, we forgo an imagined future in that role and with that team… But grief is also a journey that helps to crystalize what matters to us most. It opens a window to our values, our priorities, and how we may want to live, and in this case, work differently in the future”
2. Latest episode of Laid Off / Life On Podcast series
I learned about this series through a comment (from Kelsey Waldrop ) on the Hello Friday post referenced above. In episode 1 of season two, the host shares life and career learnings a year after being laid off… and yes, she touches on grief, along with landmines, goldmines and practical tips and resources.
3. The latest Marnie’s Midlife Marketer newsletter
In this issue Marnie provides her thoughts on 5 ways to get past the “great gloom” and find meaning and purpose in your career. It aligns really nicely with Christie’s point that sometimes in times of change or transition we get that needed clarity on what’s important and where we want to place our energy.
So, give these three resources a read and listen, and let me know your thoughts. (Hopefully you will find some common threads across all 3 and find the same level of value and wisdom that I did).
That’s all for now… Until next time.
