Issue #4: Reducing the Impact of Healthcare Worker Migration
This year’s FII8 in Riyadh convened global leaders spanning nearly every industry and discipline for three days of discussions under the theme ‘Infinite Horizons: Investing Today, Shaping Tomorrow,’ focused on how investment can serve as a catalyst for a prosperous and sustainable future.
During the event, the findings of the 2024 FII PRIORITY Compass, which surveyed 50,000+ respondents in 24 countries, were announced, unveiling crucial insights into the evolving landscape of global challenges including healthcare, which ranked in the top three highest concerns for respondents.
Contributing to the widening healthcare disparity is the fact that many healthcare professionals are migrating out of the Global South, leaving a dearth of care in the region. To bridge the gap, we need to see bilateral cooperation and targeted investment in innovation through programs like FII Institute’s #HealthyHumanity initiative, which is committed to driving investment in preventive medicine, holistic health, and global wellbeing. The Institute recently outlined how leaders can promote longevity and enhance quality of life through strategic investment in its FII Healthy Longevity Compass Report.

FII Institute Perspectives
The Global South is suffering from an exodus of health care workers as Western nations recruit these workers to address their own shortages.
According to research published in December 2019 by the UN Economic Commission for Africa, skill shortages are one of the biggest obstacles to strengthening healthcare structures.
The WHO recommends a minimum of 23 skilled health workers per 10,000 population. In 11 African states that ratio is below five, while in Niger and Somalia it is less than two.
Solving this problem will require international cooperation and deep investments in innovation. Efforts should include:
New technologies are also critical to this fight:
As the COVID-19 pandemic showed, health care is a global issue, not a national one. Leaving some nations behind is not only unethical, it makes all of us less safe. With thoughtful planning, global cooperation and targeted investment, we can create a better quality of life for all.
