It’s ok to be ‘sucky’ in the beginning. We certainly were.
A lot of people see Mindvalley on its glossier side. Great programs with world class teachers, award-winning office spaces, a really talented team from across the globe...
But what many don’t see is that BEFORE all of this is that Mindvalley was, well, really, really, really basic.
Some might even say “sucky.”
We’ve all have to start somewhere right?
Today, I just want to pull the curtain back and give you an inside look at our less than polished beginnings. And maybe it’ll serve as an important reminder than it’s ok to be messy and chaotic when you first start chasing your big dream.
Just as long as you hold on to that dream and keep moving forward. :-)
Let’s start with our first ever beach party. That’s me and my team in 2005 really “living it up”.
We stayed in a rundown cabin that cost us $10 a night, and only two people got beds - the other three slept on the floor. Not exactly a glamorous affair but still a ton of incredible memories were made.
Fast forward nine years, we rented a private island in Thailand, and flew our entire team over.
Our beach parties sparked what later became A-fest - an invite-only community of 2000+ extraordinary people from 50+ countries.
Now on to our workspace.
And in 2006 it was… well, see for yourself.
No, your eyes are not deceiving you… One of our employees at the time used a chair as a make-shift table for her laptop.
Now in 2019, we have a mind-blowing, award-winning office space complete with napping pods, pillow heaven, living green walls and a temple of light!
In 2005, our pantry consisted of the cheapest crackers money could buy and packets of 3-in-1 instant coffee.
All unceremoniously dumped on a spare table… Next to the printers.
We’ve since upgraded our diner to something a whole lot fancier.
Back in 2008, our “Hall of Awesomeness” wasn’t all that awesome. It was just a small space in the office.
And with some seriously creative improvisation (which was really born out of necessity), we doubled-up our white board as our projector screen.
Also, yes, our team sat on the floor.
But things changed just FOUR years later. We upgraded our Hall of Awesomeness into something that really lived up to its name.
A state-of-the-art auditorium in our award-winning office in Kuala Lumpur, seating 150 people. This time with a sea of pillowy bean bags. ;-)
Next… One of the only things that never sucked...our team!
It may have been a small outfit at the time but these early rockstars helped build the dream.
Today, that dream of elevating human consciousness is fueled by more than 300 people from 59 different countries.
So yes, you might come from humble beginnings, but you will make progress if you ensure one crucial thing NEVER sucks…
Your people.
All this just goes to show that it's okay to start small, and to make mistakes.
But as long as you keep your end vision in mind and plow through the difficulties, there'll be something good in the end.
