It's a Sibling Thing

It's a Sibling Thing

It's been fifteen years, but it feels like yesterday.

Our daughter Morgan was two weeks old when we learned she had a heart murmur. At two months old, she met Dr. James Thompson through a referral, where we learned she was suffering from multiple atrial septal defects (ASDs) in her heart. As Morgan grew, she was frail, tired,  and failing to thrive. At two and a half years old, she was only 17 pounds.

Dr. Thompson and his team closely monitored the ASDs in her heart. On March 1, 2007, Dr. Thompson told us the words we dreaded, we needed to fix Morgan's heart. We prayed and prayed, and God was faithful. Dr. Thompson and the talented staff INOVA FAIRFAX HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN fixed her heart without a stitch through cardiac catheterization and an Amplatzer Septal Occluder device they deployed. Several hours later, she woke up from the procedure, looked up at me, and said, "Mama, God fixed my heart. " She was only 2 1/2 years old. I will never forget those words, and even the nurse exclaimed, "This is why I love my job!

Considering Morgan's history, we monitored my son, Michael, for heart problems since he was a newborn. He was also diagnosed with an ASD, but we never worried much, because he was a big, active boy, and there was less than a 4% chance that he would have the same issues.

In April 2009, we heard those dreaded words again. At Michael's cardiologist check-up, I knew the concerned expression on Dr. Thompson's face wasn't good. He put his arm around me and said, "I'm so sorry. Michael needs the same procedure Morgan had." Once again, we faced uncertainty. At those times,  we have to face our worst fears and put our faith in God. Once again, God used Dr. Thompson to heal our child. When the doctors examined him, the hole size caused his heart and arteries to be enlarged. His heart had been pumping three times the average blood volume because of his heart problems.

Today, we are blessed to have two healthy kids who successfully underwent cardiac catheterizations to close the hole in their hearts. If it had been ten years earlier, our children would have undergone open heart surgery. We were so blessed to have Dr. Thompson, the advanced technology, and the incredible staff who not only fixed our children’s' hearts, but were able to show us kindness and support in the midst of one of our most significant trials.
