⏰ It’s Time to Update Money Transmission Laws

💸📲 In today’s digital world, ordering groceries, paying bills, and sending money to family and friends can be done seamlessly online or through an app. Money transmitters are the companies or entities that facilitate the transfer of funds and have traditionally been licensed and overseen by states.

📃✍️ Zoom out: Over the past decade, consumer demand for fast, secure #DigitalPayments has grown, and the number of money transmitters operating in the U.S. has more than doubled. To meet demand, money transmitters increasingly serve national and global markets while still being subject to individual state licensing authorities that can differ and conflict with one another. This creates uncertainty for both consumers and digital payment companies.

💫 Fortunately, a collective group of #bipartisan state regulators and industry experts, including FTA members, created a Model Law, the Money Transmission Modernization Act (#MTMA). If uniformly adopted by all jurisdictions across the country, this legislation would create a clear set of standards, lessen the regulatory burden for payment companies, promote #innovation, and protect #SmallBusinesses and consumers who rely on these tools.

🗣️“Today’s consumers and small businesses send and receive money across the U.S. with the touch of a button and expect the same rights and protections regardless of where they live or do business,” said Penny Lee, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Technology Association. “We are pleased to join the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) ' efforts in championing this model law that protects consumers while increasing the safety and soundness of our financial system.”

🚀 Learn more: More than a dozen states have enacted the Model Law. FTA recently wrote letters to state legislatures in Alaska, Illinois, Maine, South Carolina, and South Dakota urging the adoption of the MTMA. As the fintech payments industry continues to grow, states must implement this uniform legislation nationwide.
