JJ's Story
On the 12th March 2017 JJ (my son) picked up my Yamaha Alto Saxophone and started to play and it was fun, he managed to play the Epic Sax Guy which was a meme from KSI but felt like although it was fun, it wasn’t for him, he needed more of a challenge. I said I had an old Technics electronic keyboard in the loft and as he had been playing Piano Tiles on his iPad for the last year, which was like Guitar Hero where you had to hold your finger on the notes streaming down from the top of the iPad. He enjoyed the classical pieces, especially Fur Elise, Maple Leaf Rag and Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, little did he know he would come to actually learn this piece 2 years later. In fact, it was always the fast pieces that challenged him and he liked that. he played for hours, days in fact, remembering each and every single note, trying to get a perfect score. It wasn’t just about playing fast for him, it was also about accuracy, the timing, he loved it. he wanted to be challenged more.

My first ever piece he played was The Simpsons Theme tune on an old piano in our house that was lying around for years and never got used. He think it was around November 2014. However, it wasn’t until March 2017 when he started his real journey with Lost Woods: Legend of Zelda - Orcarina of Time which he learnt the same day, my fingers were numb but he couldn’t get enough. Within a few months he was playing Beethovens - Fur Elise and his first performance was 3 months after on the 15th June 2017 at school at the age of 12. The school set up a grand piano and he played in front of 100 people. The room was dead silent, his heart racing, he completely froze and his mind went blank half way through the piece, he was shaking and just couldn’t pick it up. His music teacher suggested he started again from the beginning. He composed himself and played the piece again from the top, hands and feet still shaking. He finished and received a huge round of applause, he was more than hooked and already thinking about his next piece. A month after, he played Für Elise again without any mistakes at the school summer fete, he was very happy that my practice had paid off. He still couldn’t read music and learnt the pieces through YouTube Synthesia vidoes and took inspiration from many pianists including Lang Lang, Valentina Lisita, Lord Vinheteiro and Rousseau.
Play Me I'm Yours - Bristol (23rd August 2017).
He then started to learn Scott Joplin’s - Maple Leaf Rag on the 18th August 2017 and made great progress within the first week. On the 23rd August 2017, Play Me I’m Yours - Street Piano’s came to Bristol and he went down twice to see if he could get around as many pianos as possible. His Uncle took me down one week and me, the next week and he played at least 25 of the pianos. It was a brilliant idea and he loved playing in public. Random people clapping, some even wanted to take a selfie with his, one older man gave me his phone number and asked if JJ ever wanted a piano, to let him know. He's thinking we should call him now - lol.
This gave him a huge boost to learn Maple Leaf Rag but he also wanted to learn more pieces and for Halloween 2017 he learnt Toccata + Fuge in D Minor along with Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement, Chopin - Revolutionary Etude (Op. 10 No. 12), Clare do Lune by Debussy (which is his Mum’s favourite piece), Take The L (yes he's a gamer) and on the 28th March 2018 he performed Maple Leaf Rag almost perfectly at my school talent show. The crowd was bigger and the applause was longer, it made him feel great. Taking Ragtime further, he started to read more about Scott Joplin, learning more rags, starting with The Entertainer and Heliotrope Bouquet from his 1977 film which he bought from YouTube. Check out the piano duel scene from the film here.
Scott Joplin - The King of Ragtime (1895–1917).
On the 2nd September 2019 he started college (2 years early) to study Music and Computers, his two most passionate subjects. They have been incredibly supportive, they have many pianos and he am now pushing forwards with my music by learning music theory (He's even interested in those difficult Italian words, who would’ve thought), technique and history of his favourite composers. He's even writing his own ragtime based on Scott Joplin’s style and his own cadenza for Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.
Two months after starting college, He is making great progress, however he doesn't have access to a real piano on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. He has a Yamaha P80 which was donated to me by a friend of mine which was a huge step-up from my Technics keyboard that didn’t even have weighted keys, however, it’s just not an acoustic piano. The sound isn’t real, the feeling isn’t real, it’s very different when he plays at college compared to when he plays at home. The upright piano was designed to emulate the grand piano for a concert pianist and to practice all the time on a real, upright piano is now his goal. He started looking at old, second hand pianos from Gumtree and ebay, we looked at quite a few and they were out of tune, broken and just sounded and felt awful. He would rather continue on my electronic keyboard than play on a sub-standard upright.
Old Upright Piano from Gumtree 16th October 2019.
He started to look at upright pianos that he would want to play and they were not cheap. The Yamaha U1 is a more modern piano, 1970’s but the RRP is £9,304, you can pick them up from around £2,000 on ebay or £3-4,000 from a piano shop with free delivery, free tune, 5 year guarantee. There are a few piano shops in around Wiltshire, but he found a fantastic local piano shop 20 mins from my house called The Piano Gallery in Farringdon. They had a great website with over 130 pianos in their showroom, they had a concert pianist playing many of the pianos and he convinced me to take me there. It was amazing! The biggest piano playground he's ever been in. They had grand Steinways and Yamaha’s, loads of uprights, old and new and 4 U1’s as well as a Yamaha U3.
Yamaha U1 - His Dream Piano.
We met Steve (the owner) who gave us a guided tour and then left us to sample all of the wonderful pianos in his shop. He took us straight to the Yamaha-U1, which he has wanted for a while now.
Their wide range of 130+ different pianos blew me away. From a Steinway & Sons Grand Piano, to a toy piano with 1 octave. It was as if Christmas had come early! Steve was very knowledgable and very accommodating, and told us about the take-it-away incentive scheme they offer, allowing musicians to buy an instrument and pay only 10% deposit with 18 monthly payments interest-free. This was backed by the arts council, which we thought was a great idea. We were also told about the Yamaha Incentive Scheme - Make Yourself Heard.
JJ Playing the Yamaha U1 at The Piano Gallery in Faringdon.
Steve told me that he sponsors the Swindon Young Musicians competition every year held at the Blunsdon hotel which he was going to play last year before it was cancelled. He then asked me if he would like to join Alan Roberts, the resident concert pianist a week on Saturday which was exciting. He then went on to play many of the pianos in the shop. His favourite piano was the Yamaha C3 grand piano which was just amazing. The keys felt light and made a wonderful sound and allowed him to play smooth and quickly. However, after thinking about it, the Yamaha U1 was a much more realistic choice of piano for him, both price and space.
He has now created a Go Get Funding page to help him raise money towards a Yamaha U1 piano. The cost is £3,295 and he already has saved up £768, so just another £2,527 (at the time of writing this 29/10/19) of which he already has £20 donated to him from a few lovely people. He is planning some exciting things such as posting up a summary of his journey so far on his YouTube channel - jjkennamusic (he is editing this and will be posting this very soon) as well as showing more in-depth videos on some of the highlights such as his performances, fails and successes, Play Me I’m Yours Tour in Bristol, Kings Cross performances and a regular update on his progress learning Liszt’s - Hungarian Rhapsody as well as some exciting opportunities that are coming up. We promise it will be engaging, interesting and real. His dream, is to study music at the Royal College of Music London and become a concert pianist. He would love to play at The Royal Albert Hall one day. We both believe anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
