Job Satisfaction or Paycheck: What Do Employees Really Want?
Many people would say a dime is not worth too much. But what if you needed a dime to make a life-or-death phone call? What would it be worth then?
That was the question that inspired American author, Philip K. Dick to develop a story for the 1953 issue of the magazine, Imagination.
The story, titled Paycheck, was later modified into a movie of the same name in 2003. It featured Ben Affleck who worked for Rethrick Construction on contract, and the terms were that he would be paid a large sum of money—provided he agreed to have his memory erased after the project.
He takes up the job and, after his memory is erased, finds that his paycheck includes a whole lot of odds and ends: some wire, a bus token, ticket stub, some cloth, a key, a broken poker chip, and a receipt.
It turns out that, during the project, he had refused to accept his paycheck in the form of money and had opted for these seemingly mundane items instead. And since he had his memory erased, he had no clue why he did it.
Later, as the story unfolds, all these knick-knacks come to his rescue in a series of life-threatening situations. If he accepted his paycheck, he wouldn’t have survived.
And of course, in typical movie style, he comes out victorious, saves the world, etc.
For those in HR, the movie shows that sometimes a paycheck isn’t everything, at least not in the conventional sense.
What do employees actually want?
Currently the workforce around the world is made up of three broad generational segments: the boomers, the millennials, and Gen Z. As global studies show, each segment has different views on the issue of paychecks versus job satisfaction.
So, it seems that the millennials actually don’t care too much about job satisfaction, whereas Boomers and especially Gen Z do care a lot more. While it is not advisable to generalize, this does give some pointers as to what makes different employees tick.
What we do at Zuci : Happy Minds
Among all the stressors of today, economic uncertainty caused by a lack of skill development is probably the biggest contributor to stress in the workforce today. That led us to realize that paychecks and job satisfaction are not different but just two aspects of the same issue.
While ensuring that all employees receive fair pay is straightforward, ensuring that all employees are satisfied at their workplace is more complex. This was the genesis of a comprehensive program aimed at employee health and wellbeing: Happy Minds.
Happy Minds is an ongoing program to promote physical, emotional, and mental wellness, which is one of our top priorities.
We believe wellness isn’t just something you check off a list, it’s something you weave into every part of life. As part of the ongoing sessions and programs we conduct under the Happy Minds umbrella, recently our in-house community kept the momentum going with an exciting activity: The Wellness Wheel of Fortune. From laugh-out-loud challenges to 30-second planks, memory games, and even guzzling a liter of water, it was all about finding joy in staying healthy. Because when you make wellness fun, it stops being a chore and starts being a lifestyle.

As part of Happy Minds, we signed up with an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider to offer counselling services for professional and personal challenges, support services like assessments, mental health resources, and self-care practices. We are clear that well-being is essential, and we all must take care of our emotional and mental health.
Happy Minds is only the first step in ensuring a more fulfilling and relaxed mental framework for our employees. We also encourage a culture of continuous learning and upskilling that keeps our people at the leading edge of technological developments, not following trends but setting them.
Apparently, our approach resonates with employees as well. Here’s what one of them had to say:

· ID, which is our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program that celebrates the differences that define our true identity
· LEAP (Leadership Enrichment Ascend Program) for developing emerging leaders with key leadership skills and a growth-oriented mindset
· POSH training sessions that are regularly conducted to ensure the safety and dignity of women employees
Apart from these initiatives, we also work with Kidzee to provide working parents with the best creche facilities in terms of hygiene, safety, and security. Career Comeback is our way of empowering women to re-enter professional roles with confidence.
And we have a mosaic of clubs and communities to nurture every dream—sports, books, music, ideas, events, travel, social service, finding help, fun at work, and even our own version of TEDx.
At Zuci, we realize that it takes both paychecks and fulfillment at work to really materialize the best outcomes for any organization. Our programs are designed to ensure that our people lead more fulfilling lives and contribute their best not only to the organization but also to society by being the best version of themselves.
All individuals are different, so it is necessary to focus on multiple avenues for employees to express themselves and find fulfillment at work. What initiatives do you conduct at your workplace? What results do you find after implementing them? Share your thoughts in the comments.
