📰 The Job Seeker's Insider: Cover letters are not dead
Greetings, Job Seekers!
The job market is getting more competitive with every passing day…
You can either get on the race to shine or do what everyone is already doing.
So if you want to stand out of the crowd, then:
It's time to ditch the notion that cover letters are a thing of the past because they still hold immense value in making a strong first impression on potential employers.
Crafting a cover letter requires a well-thought-out structure to talk about the story of your professional life, following how you can be the best fit for the role over 1000 other candidates who also submitted their resumes.
Here's how you can avoid common mistakes and craft a winning cover letter that gets you noticed:
1. Organized Layout:
A cluttered and unorganized cover letter is an immediate turn-off for employers. Keep it visually pleasing and easy to read by breaking it into 3-4 paragraphs, each containing a maximum of 4 lines. Use a standard font throughout for a professional appearance. Structure your cover letter with an introduction, an explanation of your interest in the company, a showcase of your relevant skills, and how they align with the job role. Be concise, compelling, and aim to keep it to just one page.
2. Avoid Adverbs:
When expressing eagerness or enthusiasm, avoid relying on excessive adverbs like "very," "almost," "barely," "entirely," "highly," "quite," "slightly," "totally," and "utterly." Instead, let your passion and genuine interest shine through in your words without relying on excessive modifiers.

3. Customization is Key:
Resist the urge to use a generic cover letter for all job applications. Customize each cover letter to the specific company and position you're applying for. Tailor your skills and experiences to match the job description, and demonstrate that you've done your research about the company. Show the employer that you are genuinely interested in their organization and not just mass-applying to various jobs.
4. Sales, not Bragging:
Think of your cover letter as a sales pitch for yourself. Highlight your skills, experiences, and accomplishments that make you a strong fit for the role, but avoid sounding like a bragger. Strike a balance between confidence and humility. Present your expertise with pride but refrain from using hyperbolic terms that may come across as arrogant.
5. Pay Attention to Detail:
Employers often include specific instructions or requirements in job postings. Make sure to read them carefully and address them in your cover letter. Following instructions shows that you are detail-oriented and capable of following directions. Additionally, don't forget to proofread your cover letter to eliminate any errors or typos. Consider asking a friend or mentor to review it as well.
