Join the movement: Commit to Mental Wellness with the Intercare Mental Health Pledge Campaign

In South Africa, the cost of absenteeism to the economy is a staggering R15 billion a year. A significant reason behind this is the mental health crisis: About 15% of employees are absent daily, with 36% of the population feeling distressed or struggling to cope, impacting their work performance.

Organisations that focus on mental well-being in the workplace enhance employee overall performance. This commitment positions companies as responsible and caring, which boosts their reputation and leads to increased business opportunities and loyalty.

To combat the mental health crisis and its impact on the workplace, Intercare introduces a Mental Health Pledge campaign. With a suicide rate of 23.5 per 100,000 people and 70% of people who struggle with mental health not receiving treatment, this initiative aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health.

Congratulations. This is a much needed initiative. I applaud you. Research has shown , depressed employees miss more than 30 days of work per year. Anxiety and chronic stress can also prevent employees from fully “showing up” to work, leading to reduced effectiveness and sometimes life threatening mistakes.

Some companies don't really worry about the well-being of their staff and why they take off. They worry about the money they're losing when you are not at work. Warnings for absenteeism gets handed out quicker than an assisting hand and kind word.
