Join Us in Discussing the Future of AI in Health

When ChatGPT was introduced back in November 2022, like many, I signed up, and within minutes, I witnessed just how quickly it could answer questions that would take me hours to research on my own.

For me, that experience, combined with what I knew Stanford Medicine was exploring with AI, crystalized the notion that we had arrived at a rare inflection point. The kind of technology leap that redefines the future of everything, including how we at Stanford deliver on our mission of research, education, and patient care. In a field where the stakes are always high, I also knew immediately that navigating this transformation would involve enormous complexity and risk, but also profound opportunity. In AI, we have a tool that could prove transformative for lifting global health and predicting and preventing disease with historic precision.

I connected with my colleague, Stanford computer science professor and AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li, PhD, who is all-too-familiar with these complexities, and last summer, we launched RAISE Health, a joint initiative between Stanford Medicine and the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), which Fei-Fei co-directs. The focus of our initiative is to convene diverse stakeholders in discussions about AI’s role in biomedicine, to share vital resources for navigating this rapidly evolving landscape, and to articulate frameworks and principles that can serve as a north star for responsible AI innovation.

We’ve now arrived at the next step in our journey. I’m pleased to share that RAISE Health is hosting its first symposium on May 14, “Charting AI’s Future in Health and Medicine,” and I personally invite you to attend.

Virtual and In-Person Symposium on Responsible AI on May 14

The one-day, hybrid event will explore AI’s potential to transform medicine and to spotlight critical challenges for ensuring that AI is developed safely, fairly, and effectively. We will be joined by two dozen leaders in health care, academia, technology, and advocacy to discuss pressing issues in AI innovation, from foundational principles for building algorithms to practical frameworks for implementation.

The sessions also will explore how public and private entities can collaborate to leverage AI for the global good; the importance of using these powerful technologies to support vulnerable populations and advance health equity; and ways to leverage AI in biomedical research to accelerate scientific discovery and its path to clinical use. Additionally, we are pleased to host fireside chats with Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, president of the American Medical Association; and Hatim Abdulhussein, CEO for Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex and chief officer of the National Health Service Health Innovation Network in England.

I look forward to engaging and informative discussions at the symposium, and I’m excited about the ideas and collaborations that they will no doubt spark. As we navigate this inflection point for AI, I’m optimistic about what lies ahead. Working together, we can chart a positive course for innovations in health and medicine, paving the way for a healthier future for all.

I hope to see you at the symposium.
