Join Your Audience's Routine

What time are you reading this?

These words, right now.

If you're like most internet users, there are specific times when you're likely to be reading this newsletter.

Maybe you're a 'wake up and read over coffee' person (Hey! That's me!).

Maybe you're a 'wind down at the end of the day' reader.

Maybe you're in the bathroom right now (no judgement...).

In aggregate, people have routines, and many routines are not unique.

For example, kids are far less likely than adults to be awake at 8am on a Saturday. If you're a parent, you know why.

And parents are far less likely to be awake at 11:30pm than non-parents. If you're a non-parent, you know why.

Your audience likely has routines, and based on your primary audience, those routines likely have similarities.

Now it's your social media goal to become part of the routine.

The newsletter Morning Brew is a perfect example, focusing on news of the day in a fun way.

Based on the name alone...do you know what part of the routine they're aiming to be?

That's right! For young professionals, they're the first read of the day over coffee!

You don't have to literally name your brand the part of the routine you wish to be, but there are great ways to create that routine.

For example:

  • Posting at the same time and day of the week for certain desirable pieces of content so your audience starts their habituation journey
  • A giveaway at the same time in the morning where you reward the first five people who respond.
  • Live events for super fans at your ideal time.
  • ...or you can become a master manipulator and just seed the idea of your ideal time in your content ("Time for your midnight missive, fellow vampires!")

When you start to habituate your audience to think about your content at a certain time, you become part of their day.

And habituation is powerful.

Now, early-rising social media addicts, here's my mission for you for the day.

Look at your analytics and see what time and days your audience is engaging the most.

First of all, is this what you want? If not, perhaps it's time to reconsider your posting schedule.

If this is what you want, think about why. Who is your audience and what are they doing at that time? Once you know, find some sly ways to re-enforce that time so you can 'own it'.

That took 2 minutes. You have 8 minutes left. Thank you for reading this at 7am every Thursday before you get ready for work, and grow 1% right now!
