Joshua 1:9 - Two Important Leadership Words - Strength and Courage

An important Bible verse that CEOs and leaders need to consider is Joshua 1:9. This verse was suggested by CEO Eduardo Vega , managing director of Three Keys Capital.

In the world of business, leaders often find themselves standing at a crossroads, facing difficult decisions, uncertainty, and moments of self-doubt. The pressure of leading a team, managing finances, and driving growth can feel overwhelming at times, especially during difficult market shifts. It is in these moments that the powerful words from Joshua 1:9 provide a vital reminder and source of strength for Christian business leaders.

Joshua 1:9 states, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

This verse, spoken by God to Joshua as he prepared to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land, is just as relevant to business leaders today as it was to leaders when it was spoken. The principles of strength, courage, and the abiding presence of God can transform how you lead and operate your businesses.

1. Courage in Uncertainty

One of the most daunting challenges in business is navigating uncertainty. Whether it is the shifting economy, changes in market demand, or unforeseen crises, uncertainty is a constant companion to entrepreneurs and executives. Joshua 1:9 speaks directly to this challenge by calling leaders to be strong and courageous.

Joshua was stepping into Moses' shoes, a monumental task. His mission was to lead a nation into an unknown future, and he had no guarantees of what would happen. Similarly, in business, you often face the unknown—new markets, evolving technology, and unexpected competition. But like Joshua, you are called to move forward, not by your own strength, but through the courage that comes from trusting in God's plan.

As business leaders, you must resist the temptation to make decisions out of fear. Fear can paralyze you, leading to missed opportunities and poor leadership. Instead, you are called to act courageously, trusting that God’s wisdom and guidance will direct your paths. This courage allows you to make bold decisions, invest in new ventures, and step out in faith, even when the future seems unclear.

2. Strength in Adversity

Joshua 1:9 also reminds the business leader to "be strong." Strength in business leadership goes beyond physical endurance or mental sharpness; it involves inner resilience. Every business will face adversity—financial challenges, team conflicts, and even failure. The strength to endure and continue leading through tough times comes from your faith in God’s promises.

Adversity is not the time to retreat or give up; it is an opportunity to grow stronger. In my experience, the best leaders are those who have faced hardship and emerged on the other side with greater wisdom and perseverance. As Christian business leaders, you are equipped with an extra layer of strength, knowing that God is our refuge and source of power.

A leader's strength is most evident in how they respond to crises. Do they panic, or do they lead with a calm and steady hand? The businesses that succeed are often those with leaders who are steadfast in their vision and purpose, even when the storm rages around them. This strength is not something you muster up on our own—it is God-given, built on the foundation of faith.

3. The Presence of God in Leadership

The final part of Joshua 1:9 is perhaps the most comforting: "for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." As business leaders, you often feel the weight of responsibility on your shoulders. You may feel isolated, believing that you alone carry the burden of your company’s success or failure. Yet, this verse reminds you that you are never alone in your leadership journey.

God's presence is not limited to your personal lives; it extends to your work, your businesses, and your leadership. He is with you in the boardroom, in negotiations, and in the decisions you make daily. This divine partnership transforms the way you lead. Knowing that God is with you gives you the confidence to face challenges, the wisdom to make critical decisions, and the peace to remain calm in turbulent times.

When you lead with an awareness of God's presence, it impacts your relationships with employees, clients, and stakeholders. You begin to see your business as more than just a means to profit but as a platform to glorify God and serve others. You become stewards of the resources, talents, and opportunities He has entrusted to you.

One More Second Step Comment: Leading with Courage and Faith

Joshua 1:9 is more than just a call to personal courage—it is a blueprint for how Christian leaders should approach their roles in business. By embracing courage in uncertainty, strength in adversity, and the presence of God in every decision, you can lead with confidence and purpose.

In today's fast-paced and often ruthless business world, Christian leaders are called to a higher standard. You are not just leading for success but for kingdom impact. As you take bold steps in your businesses, remember the words God spoke to Joshua and claim them for yourself: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

With this mindset, you can face any challenge, knowing that your leadership is guided by God Himself. Lead with faith, courage, and the unwavering belief that God is with you, no matter where the journey takes you.

Amen - strength and courage, great exhortation and encouragement. More on point 3 - the presence of God being with you. We are only able to strong and courageous because of His presence with us, and in us. Joshua was mentored by Moses, who took him into the Tent of Meeting. In fact Joshua would linger and stay in the tent after Moses left- see Ex 33:11. What a great example of being with the Lord and becoming used to His presence. For He is the source of our courage and strength.
