Journeying Through the Intricacies of Insect Science: icipe Science Week 2024

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) is thrilled to launch its inaugural Science Week, a unique gathering that highlights a celebration of cutting-edge science, technology and innovations for a healthier Africa and the people behind it! Taking place on Monday, 11 November 2024 at the icipe Duduville Campus in Kasarani, Nairobi, Science Week will run alongside our 40th Annual General Meeting of the icipe Governing Council, amplifying the importance of collaboration, knowledge exchange, and scientific innovation for a healthier Africa.

With the theme "Journeys Through the Intricacies of Insect Science", icipe Science Week 2024 is designed to engage participants in the fascinating and often underappreciated world of insects. From groundbreaking research in biological control to emerging solutions in food security and climate resilience, the event will showcase icipe’s contributions to creating a healthier and more sustainable future for Africa.

Highlights of Science Week 2024

This year’s Science Week program is rich with presentations, discussions, and exhibitions that illustrate the breadth of insect science and its applications. Here are some of the key highlights:

  • Keynote Address by Dr. Samira Mohamed A leader in the field of agricultural and climate research, Dr. Mohamed will deliver the keynote address titled "Biological Control: The Underestimated Arsenals". Her talk will explore the vast potential of biological control methods that icipe champions as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. This approach not only enhances crop yields but also plays a vital role in safeguarding Africa's ecosystems.
  • DuduTalks – Thought-Provoking Presentations by Emerging Scientists Our DuduTalks sessions will offer insights from icipe’s talented postdoctoral fellows who will share their pioneering research in various fields. Highlights include:
  • Exhibitions and Student Poster Displays Attendees will have the opportunity to tour exhibitions that showcase icipe’s projects and witness the vibrant research conducted by our students. These displays underscore icipe’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists and promoting innovation in insect science.
  • Tree Planting Ceremony To embody icipe’s commitment to environmental sustainability, we will host a tree-planting ceremony. This gesture symbolizes our dedication to preserving biodiversity and fostering a resilient environment for future generations.

Reflecting on Four Decades of Impact

For forty years, icipe has been at the forefront of advancing insect science in Africa, addressing pressing challenges that impact agriculture, health, and the environment. Science Week 2024 is not only an opportunity to share our latest research but also a moment to reflect on the journey that has brought us here. Through partnerships, community engagement, and scientific excellence, icipe has contributed to transformative changes that continue to benefit millions across the continent.

As we look to the future, icipe remains committed to driving sustainable solutions through science. Our goal is to empower communities, improve food security, promote human and environmental health, and ultimately create a more resilient Africa.

Join Us for Science Week 2024

We warmly welcome researchers, policymakers, partners, and the media to join us for icipe Science Week 2024. This is a moment to celebrate science, connect with innovators, and explore pathways for collaboration. Through sessions like DuduTalks and our exhibitions, attendees will gain firsthand insight into the fascinating world of insect science and the possibilities it holds for a sustainable future.
