Joy in God's Gifts: Insights from Ecclesiastes 5:19-20

Introduction

Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 (AMP) teaches that life’s blessings are a gift from God, meant to be enjoyed with gratitude. This scripture emphasizes the importance of recognizing God as the source of all provision and finding contentment in His gifts. It highlights how joy, work, and satisfaction are interconnected when we align our perspective with God’s purposes. For today’s believers, this truth is both a comfort and a guide. It encourages us to embrace God’s blessings with thanksgiving, seeing them as opportunities to glorify Him. It also challenges us to shift our focus from worldly striving to spiritual contentment.

Now Let’s Eat Some Meat!

Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 (AMP): “Also, every man to whom God has given riches and possessions, He has also given the power and ability to enjoy them and to receive this as his allotted portion, and to rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God [to him]. For he will not often consider the troubled days of his life, because God keeps him occupied and focused on the joy of his heart [and the tranquility of God indwells him].”

The Context of Ecclesiastes 5:19-20

Ecclesiastes, traditionally attributed to King Solomon, examines the meaning of life through the lens of human experiences and divine wisdom. In Chapter 5, the author reflects on the fleeting nature of wealth and the futility of chasing material gain. Verses 19-20 contrast this by highlighting the joy and satisfaction that come from seeing wealth and work as gifts from God. The focus shifts from striving for more to appreciating what God has already provided.

For the original audience, these verses served as a reminder to trust in God’s provision rather than being consumed by anxiety over wealth. For today’s believers, they underscore the importance of contentment, gratitude, and recognizing God’s hand in every blessing.

Relevance to Today’s Believers

In a world that glorifies success, wealth, and accumulation, Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 offers a refreshing perspective. These verses teach us that true joy comes not from the quantity of what we have but from the ability to enjoy it as a gift from God. They remind believers that God provides not only material blessings but also the capacity to find satisfaction in them.

For modern Christians, this scripture is a call to align our hearts with God’s purposes. It challenges us to move away from constant striving and to embrace gratitude for His provision. It also assures us that God offers peace and joy, even in the midst of life’s challenges, when we trust in Him.

Supporting Scriptures

1 Timothy 6:17 (AMP): “As for the rich in this present world, instruct them not to be conceited and arrogant, nor to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”

This verse aligns with Ecclesiastes 5:19-20, emphasizing that God is the source of all good things and desires us to enjoy them with humility. James 1:17 (AMP): “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes].” This scripture reinforces the fact that all true blessings originate from God’s goodness. Every good gift is from God!

Philippians 4:11-12 (AMP): “Not that I speak from [any personal] need, for I have learned to be content [and self-sufficient through Christ, satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or uneasy] regardless of my circumstances. I know how to get along and live humbly [in difficult times], and I also know how to enjoy abundance and live in prosperity. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret [of facing life], whether well-fed or going hungry, whether having an abundance or being in need.” Paul’s perspective on contentment aligns with Ecclesiastes’ emphasis on finding joy and satisfaction in God’s provision. Simply because it is, God’s provision.

Psalm 128:2 (AMP) “When you shall eat the fruit of [the labor of] your hands, you will be happy and blessed, and it will be well with you.” This verse echoes the theme of joy in labor and blessings as gifts from God.

Proverbs 10:22 (AMP): “The blessing of the Lord brings [true] riches, and He adds no sorrow to it [for it comes as a blessing from God].” God’s blessings, when received with gratitude, bring joy without the burdens of striving. Deuteronomy 8:18 (AMP): But you shall remember [with profound respect] the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore (solemnly promised) to your fathers, as it is this day.” This scripture affirms that God gives us the power to make wealth, however God lets us know that the reason He does so is to “confirm His covenant which He swore (solemnly promised)”. So there’s no reason for man to be arrogant, boastful, or selfish in his wealth. Applications for Modern Faith

Embracing Gratitude: Believers are encouraged to recognize and thank God for every blessing, big or small, understanding that they are gifts from His hand.

Finding Joy in Daily Work: This scripture challenges Christians to view our labor not as toil but as a God-given opportunity to be blessed and therefore contribute and grow.

Living with Contentment: Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 calls us to let go of material striving and embrace satisfaction in what God has already provided living in full faithful expectation that God will always provide.. Trusting God’s Provision: These verses remind believers to rely on God’s faithfulness, knowing that He supplies what we need for both life and joy.

Sharing God’s Blessings: Recognizing that our blessings are gifts from God and not our own,  inspires believers to share generously with others, reflecting God’s character. Letting others see God in our giving.

Summary

Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 (AMP) presents a powerful truth about the nature of God’s blessings and our response to them. These verses teach that riches, possessions, and the ability to enjoy them are all gifts from God, meant to bring joy and satisfaction. They also reveal that when we focus on God’s provision, He fills our hearts with joy, allowing us to experience peace even in life’s difficulties.

Cross-referenced scriptures such as 1 Timothy 6:17 and James 1:17 reinforce the message that every blessing comes from God and is intended for our enjoyment. Philippians 4:11-12 and Psalm 128:2 encourage believers to find contentment in God’s provision, whether in abundance or need. Deuteronomy 8:18 further clarifies that wealth and the power to make it are from God, however here we learn the base reason for that is to “confirm His covenant” or to authenticate, corroborate, substantiate, validate, and verify His pledge, vow, promise, oath, contract! Together, these verses highlight the importance of gratitude, trust, and aligning our perspective with God’s will.

For today’s believers, Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 is a reminder to live with thanksgiving and joy, recognizing God as the source of all blessings. It challenges us to embrace contentment, finding satisfaction in the work and resources He has given. This scripture also assures us that God offers peace and joy to those who trust in Him, even amidst life’s challenges.

Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 reminds us that God’s blessings are both material and spiritual. He not only provides for our needs but also grants us the ability to enjoy His gifts with joy and peace. As believers, let us live with gratitude, finding satisfaction in the work of our hands and the blessings of our lives. May this scripture encourage us to trust in God’s provision, share generously, and live with contentment, knowing that every good thing comes from Him.
