THE JOY OF SERVING

THE JOY OF SERVING

In September, I applied to be a volunteer coach for the second edition of the IESE MBA Students Speech Contest in Barcelona. I wasn't familiar with IESE but I learned that in September of this year, the IESE Business School's MBA program was ranked as the second best in Europe according to Bloomberg Businessweek Best European B-Schools 2024-25 ranking .

The contest featured 10 speakers, and I was selected as one of 10 coaches. My coachee for the event was Dhawal (pictured holding the microphone), and he, like the other nine contestants, was hoping to earn one of two 'winning' spots. The reward was a speaking slot at TEDx IESE Barcelona in February 2025.

Initially, I saw this as a double-edged opportunity: to help a young presenter, and to expand my network. However, when I met Dhawal and heard the message embedded in his 5-minute speech, I thought, "THERE'S an idea worth spreading!" I was moved to focus on serving him in the best way possible. The idea of network expansion was no longer a factor.

We met via video conference; he is in Barcelona, Spain, and I'm in Georgia, USA. We also exchanged videos and messages on WhatsApp. With each interaction, I felt more exhilarated, and it was a joy seeing him grow so much so quickly.

The event took place on Monday, and I was able to watch LIVE via Zoom. All ten speakers took the event theme 'BEYOND PASSION' and presented strong messages, touching on various ideas including pivoting, taking action, mindfulness, and survival. They shared their personal experiences and gave their hybrid audience reasons to think.

In the end, the panel of judges agreed that Dhawal earned a spot at February's event and I was thrilled! I had experience the joy of serving and seeing Dhawal earn that reward was deeply gratifying.

That said, my joy was multiplied as I read and exchanged WhatsApp messages with the other coaches, and read comments and posts on LinkedIn. Our coaches, who hail from Mauritius, Nigeria, India, Australia, Spain, USA and Malaysia were extremely supportive and encouraging, and it became clear to me that THEY TOO experienced the joy of serving!

It's clear to me that everyone involved in the program truly enjoyed serving these MBA students and I am so thankful that they confirmed to me that when we serve willingly, enthusiastically and freely, it will fill us with joy.

Thanks to the organizers Tulia Lopes and Cormac Walsh, DTM as well as coaches Ayesha J Bibha, CSP , Dr. Saurabh Patil , • Jasmine Romaine 🎤 , Vikas Jain , Maria Kelly , Oliver Watson Rhythm , Ravin Souvendra Papiah CSP EIA DTM FCIM FAC MBA , Sadiq Nasir , and Kiran Deep Sandhu for reminding me of the joy of serving.

Thanks and congratulations to the contestants Cameron Harnish , Rijuta K. , Devyangana Sagar , Sofia Rud Natacha Zouein , Aleix Uriol Peralta , Handy Gunawan , Khanya Modipa CA (SA) , Yuni J. and Dhawal Armarkar

SO HERE'S MY ASK:

Serve your clients in the best way possible. Focus on giving them an unforgettable experience. Then you will experience the joy of serving.

By the way...my network DID begin to grow fro the event, without me focusing or putting any emphasis on it. That was a bonus that followed THE JOY OF SERVING.

Dear Mark Brown, CSP we truly have something in common: serving is a beautiful and rewarding two-way experience. The more we give, the more we receive. I’m grateful to have learned this lesson long ago, and since then, serving has been at the core of everything I do. I’m confident that Cormac Walsh, DTM, shares this belief, which is why we continue to come together to amplify the spirit of serving. I’m thrilled to have you now closer to us and part of our big family, we can serve together. 😍

"The Joy of Serving" is a topic that resonates deeply with me as a speaker and coach. Thank you for sharing your experience and the valuable insights you’ve gained. Adopting the mindset that a speaker’s primary role is to serve the audience truly sets you apart. When we set ego aside and focus fully on service, we open the door to profoundly meaningful experiences—just like the one you described. You continue to inspire me. Thank you again for your example and your generosity in sharing.

"Beautifully said Mark Brown, CSP. How can I serve? This question is also a mantra for me—a guiding principle in how I show up for my family, friends, community, organization, and ultimately, the world. It’s about striving to be the best possible version of myself in each precise moment. I see it as a journey—a work in progress—and being mindful of this ongoing process is essential. When we give from the heart, the impact often ripples far beyond what we can see or imagine, returning to us in unexpected ways. What a profound opportunity we all have to continue evolving, to inspire, and to make a difference—word by word, or as I like to say, beat by beat with Joy."😉
