Get insights from our Insurance media insights report

Our latest industry report is out and offers a detailed look into the coverage of seven major insurance companies across various media outlets. In the competitive insurance world, creative communications campaigns and brand presence are key priorities in business strategy. That is why we are curious to see how insurance companies emphasised effective measurement and evaluation of their communications.

This report provides qualitative analysis on Insurance companies content in a sample of Tier 1 online media publications across Europe throughout the month of May 2024, analysing 7 main companies – Generali, Aviva, Zurich, Allianz, AXA, Chubb, AIG.

Key Observations

  • Volumes Overview

May saw 4741 online mentions for the analysed group of insurance companies across European outlets. Content was generated primarily from Germany, followed by UK and Italy. When reduced to the analysed sample from selected tier 1 outlets from each country, mentions came to 358, with 48% of those mentions stemming from the UK.

  • Key Drivers

Insurance industry coverage for May was driven mostly by corporate mentions with Q1 financial results and personnel appointments announced for almost every company. Financial results were positive across the board. The exception was some balanced coverage which came through for Generali, as stock declined despite a better-than-expected net profit and some concerns around the property and casualty business were articulated.

  • Key Takeaways

Outside Corporate coverage, each insurer only lightly touches upon various strategic initiatives; while by comparison to other industries, navigating elements that are common to the industry but external to the business does not feature as prominently in the media as evidenced by the ‘themes’ presence at 11%.

Amanda Blanc, CEO of Aviva, capitalised on key messaging around strength and confidence upon the release of Q financial results. This in addition to her mentions on Insurance Post’s Power list set her apart from competitor CEOs in presence and impact.

Advanced measurement techniques from the Ultimate Guide to measuring the value of communication

As the landscape of Public Relations and Communications continues to evolve, so too must our approaches to measurement. Moving beyond foundational metrics, this chapter explores advanced techniques that offer deeper insights into the effectiveness of communication strategies. These methodologies enable professionals to not only quantify but also qualify the impact of their efforts, providing a comprehensive view of their influence on the organisation's objectives.

  • Quantitative vs. Qualitative Measurement

Quantitative data, with its numerical foundation, offers a clear, objective measure of performance, such as reach, impressions, and engagement rates. Qualitative measurement techniques, such as sentiment analysis, thematic content analysis, and tone of voice, advise on trends and identify the behaviours of the landscape that is being navigated, while providing an educational basis on which an effective strategy can be formed.

  • Measuring the Immeasurable: Brand Reputation and Authority

Brand reputation and authority, while seemingly intangible, can be measured through a combination of qualitative and quantitative metrics. Online reviews, sentiment analysis, and the quality of media coverage can offer insights into brand reputation. Meanwhile, authority can be gauged through metrics such as backlinks from reputable sites, mentions by industry leaders, and rankings in relevant online discussions.

  • Sentiment Analysis and Its Importance

Sentiment analysis, a cornerstone of qualitative measurement, utilises advanced analytics and natural language processing to gauge the sentiment behind media coverage and social media interactions. This technique allows professionals to categorise mentions as positive, negative, balanced or neutral, offering a deeper understanding of the emotional resonance of their communications.

  • Media Reach and Its True Impact

Considering reach in the context of source analyses, engagement metrics, media quality insight, and share of voice are more compelling criteria in assessing the true impact of communications. These metrics offer insights into how effectively a communication campaign penetrates its intended audience and influences the broader public discourse. They allow professionals to differentiate between mere exposure and meaningful engagement, guiding strategic decisions towards creating more impactful and resonant communications.
