July - Learning Machines: Insights on AI from FT Strategies
Hello and welcome to Learning Machines, our monthly review of AI news that is relevant, actionable and interesting for media and publishing.
It’s been a month of football and elections here in Europe, and, of course, AI.
I’ve spent the last month travelling around the continent, spending time with eight publishers who were part of our inaugural AI Launchpad programme. Throughout our onsite workshops, we had many fascinating discussions about how to move from AI experimentation to ‘business as usual’.
Newsroom use cases for AI are increasingly well understood, yet the key question for many is how to turn these proofs-of-concept into user-facing products or embed them in daily workflows. We will soon publish a report on the AI Launchpad programme that will focus on the specific question of ‘Build or Buy?’.
‘Build or Buy’ is not a new question, but additional considerations come up when the topic is AI. To name a few: leakage of intellectual property, visibility on costs as the product scales, and risk of building on tech that could soon become obsolete. We’ve formed our own view on how to approach the question over the last six months as we’ve worked on a mix of in-house and vendor-assisted projects.
It’s been a busy summer for FT Strategies in AI. Members of our team were also in Sweden last month for an AI Design Sprint where we saw some recurring themes emerge which we have summarised below.
